  1. What makes a good presentation?

  2. Making a Presentation • A good introduction will capture your audience’s interest. • A good conclusion will sum up the main points of your presentation and ensure the your audience has understood.

  3. Constructing a PowerPoint • Use a minimum font size of 24 to ensure everyone can read it. • Do not use too many animations as they can be distracting. • The content of the slide should reinforce the main points you are making in your talk.

  4. Do not read from your notes. • If you have notes, use only bullet points. • Do not write out word for word what you will be saying; you will end up reading off your notes. • Keep your head and chin up; you will appear confident.

  5. Eye Contact • By looking at your audience, you show confidence. • Try looking just above the heads of your audience so that it appears that you are looking at your audience.

  6. Speak clearly! • Speak loudly so that the people at the back of the room can hear you. Imagine you are speaking to a person you know at the back of the room. • Slow down, do not rush your presentation.

  7. Language • Use formal English when addressing your audience. For example: Good afternoon, we are here to discuss……. Instead of: Hiya I’m gonna tell ya about….

  8. Helpful Tools • Use flash cards to help you remember points, stay focused and allow you to present in a clear and organised order. • Any visual aids must be clear to the audience, so remember they cannot be too small.

  9. Practice • Have several practices of your presentation. • This will leave you feeling confident and less nervous about standing in front of people. • Remember: PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.

  10. Things to avoid • Fidgeting. • Reading off your paper. • Giggling • Hiding behind your paper. • Don’t hold big pieces of paper, as shaking becomes obvious.

  11. Confidence Boosters • The audience are on your side. • Know your topic thoroughly. • Make sure you have eaten something. • Get a good night’s sleep the night before. • Smile, breathe and relax.

  12. Listening to a Presentation • Pay attention, do not distract the reader. • Nod in agreement. • Sit comfortably.

  13. Smile appropriately. • Do not giggle, talk or make inappropriate comments to the presenter. • Wait until the end to ask questions.

  14. Be prepared to peer assess. • Be prepared to ask questions about what you have heard. • Be prepared to answer questions about what you have heard.
