EVENTS LEADING UP TO VE DAY • The Allied Expeditionary Force’s commands an unconditional surrender on all fronts • Negotiations were signed in Riems on May 7th at 2:41 AM • Senior officers from Britain, America, Russia and France were present at the time of the signing
The Actual Event • 17 hours after the signing, the Ministry of Information released the formal announcement that the 8th of May would be regarded as Victory in Europe Day • In the afternoon of VE day, the royal family came out on the balcony along with Winston Churchill, who gave a speech • At approximately nine, the sky above St. Paul’s Cathedral was lit with two search lights were crossed in a “V” for victory • A celebration of the previous six years of war
