  2. The Description of Skin Cancer • Cancer develops when DNA, the molecule found in cells that encodes genetic information, becomes damaged and the body cannot repair the damage.

  3. Symptoms • A small lump (spot or mole) that is shiny, waxy, pale in color, and smooth in texture. • A red lump (spot or mole) that is firm. • A sore or spot that bleeds or becomes crusty. Also look for sores that don’t heal. • Rough and scaly patches on the skin. • Flat scaly areas of the skin that are red or brown. • Any new growth that is suspicious.

  4. Treatment For Skin Cancer • Surgery • Radiation Therapy • Chemotherapy • Photodynamic Therapy • Biologic Therapy

  5. Prevention Tips • Avoid sun during the middle of the day. • Wear sunscreen year round. • Wear protective clothing. • Avoid tanning beds. • Be aware of sun-sensitizing medications. • Check skin regularly and report changes to your doctor.
