  2. Introduction Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S. and effects 1 million people per year.

  3. Who it Effects Anyone can get skin cancer. Men and women both are at equal risk of skin cancer. Skin cancer is also more common in people with a lighter skin (or freckles) light hair and light eyes.

  4. Causes/Risk Factors • Having a family history of skin cancer • Indoor tanning • Blue/green eyes • Blonde/red hair • Large numbers of moles • Skin that burns, freckles, reddens, or becomes painful in the sun • Sun exposure through work/play • Having a lighter natural skin color

  5. Symptoms • Sores that don’t heal • A change in a mole • Wrinkles • Blotches or spots • Changes in old growths • New growths

  6. Treatments • Freezing moles or skin growths • Surgery • Chemotherapy • Photodynamic therapy • Biological therapy • Radiation therapy

  7. Prevention • Staying in the shade • Wear clothing that covers your arms and legs • Wear a hat with a wide brim • Wear sunscreen • Avoid tanning
