Welcome To The College of Southern Maryland! • Did you know that: • CSM is the 6th largest Community College in the State? • CSM has the second largest enrollment of Veterans in a Maryland Community College? • We have three campuses, three training sites and a fourth campus on the way? • We have more than 130 degrees and certificate programs? • More than 60% of Southern Maryland Residents take courses with us?

CSM Student Characteristics • Average Class Size- 20 students • 9,217 total credit students; 6,051 at La Plata • 62% female • 34% minority • 64% of CSM students transfer to a 4-year college • CSM has numerous partnerships in bachelor’s degree programs in Southern Maryland (see catalog for a full list) • Over 40 program articulations with 23 schools…and counting!

What Is FERPA? • FERPA stands for Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, enacted in 1974 • As a college student, your records and your grades are yours alone • FERPA mandates that all college academic records are the “property” of the student • Students must give written permission for disclosure of grades and other information to third parties

  7. What is the Bursar’s Office? • The Bursar’s Office is responsible for the billing and collection of tuition and fees, for maintaining student account information and collecting delinquent accounts. • Payment due in full by : • August 14, 2013 for Fall 2013 Semester • Drops due to non-payment • College Refund Policy (See catalog for further information)

  9. When/Why/How Should I See An Academic Advisor? Advising Mission CSM provides academic advising as a shared responsibility between the college community and its students. This intentional planning process teaches students to access, use and interpret resources to attain their academic, career and personal goals.

When/Why/How Should I See An Academic Advisor? • You should see an Academic Advisor: • Before you earn 18 / 36 credits • To discuss career goals, and transfer options • To change your program of study • To apply for graduation • If you are on Academic Probation • If you plan to take more than 19 credits • If you have an academic / policy related question • You should schedule an appointment to see an Academic Advisor • You may contact an academic advisor by email at • advisor@csmd.edu

Tutors are available in Math, Accounting, Biology, Physics, and English/Writing • Testing Center • Conducts Placement, Classroom (make-up), and Correspondence testing

Registration & Payment Options • You will be able to register today! • In order to secure a spot in a course, you must do one of the following when you register: • Pay in Full (online or at any campus) • Make a 20% down payment (on the day your register) • Enroll in FACTS – CSM’s Tuition Payment Plan • Confirm and secure receipt of financial assistance • (have a FAFSA on file)

  17. What If I Need Financial Assistance? • FAFSA • FreeApplication for Federal Student Aid • Apply online: www.fafsa.ed.gov • March 1 : Priority deadline receive MD funds, you can still apply now for federal funds! • Opens the door to grants, loans and scholarships!

  35. Step 2: Click on “What’s my Username/Password?”

  36. Step 3: Click on “Online Services” for your Username

  37. Step 4: Enter your Last Name and your student ID number (seven digits) then click “SUBMIT” Example: Enter Last Name Enter Student ID

  38. Step 5: Write down your Username in the Student Handbook on page 144! Then click “LOG IN” #2 Example: #1

  39. Step 6: Enter the Username and your seven digit student ID #, then click “Login” Example:

  40. Step 7: Create a new password using letters and numbers. This password must be at least 8 characters long, but no more than 20, then click “Change Password”
