  4. AKS • 43a - identify the causes and results of the revolutions in England (1689), United States (1776), France (1789), Haiti (1791), and Latin America (1808-1825)

  5. Causes • King Charles I: • Dissolved Parliament in 1629 • What is Parliament? • Imposed heavy taxes • Had an intolerant religious policy • What was England's official religion? • Charles attacked Parliament in 1642 • Charles fled and raised an army

  6. The English Civil War • The Puritans found a general – Oliver Cromwell • Cromwell and his supporters were victorious • What happened to Charles I? • Cromwell became the leader of a new Republican government

  7. Restoration • After Cromwell’s death, Parliament asked Charles II to become king – this period is called Restoration • Habeas Corpus – “to have body” • Every prisoner had the right to be brought in front of a judge to specify the charges • Why is this important today? • Thus, a monarch could not throw someone in jail for no reason

The Glorious Revolution • After Charles II died (1685), his brother James became king • He was over thrown in a bloodless revolution called the Glorious Revolution • Why do we call it “bloodless?” • This created a Constitutional Monarchy • Laws limited a rulers power • The English Bill of Rights were created

  9. The English Bill of Rights • No suspension of parliaments laws • No taxes without permission from Parliament • Freedom of speech in Parliament • No penalty for petitioning grievances with the King
