Principles of Design. How you use the Elements of Art. Why do we need to know these?. If the principles are not used correctly people know the art work does not look good. We want our art to appeal to a wide range of people and show our ability to make art well.

Why do we need to know these? • If the principles are not used correctly people know the art work does not look good. • We want our art to appeal to a wide range of people and show our ability to make art well. • This takes the physical Elements of Art and makes them work together so that they are pleasing to ourselves and the viewer.

  3. Balance Equal visual weight

  4. Balance • Visual weight refers to the distribution of the Elements of Art in the artwork. • There are three types of balance • Formal/ Symmetrical • Informal/ Asymmetrical • Radial

  5. Formal / Symmetrical This means that the Elements of Art are distributed the same or approximately the same on both sides of an axis.

  9. Informal / Asymmetrical This means that the Elements of Art are distributed differently on both sides of an axis.

  13. Radial This means that the Elements of Art are distributed around a central location in a circular format.

  17. Emphasis The area of the artwork that holds your attention the most. Also referred to at the Focal Point.

  21. Repetition / Pattern This means that the Elements of Art are used more than one time (odd numbers are better) in a work of art.

  33. Rhythm This is the path the Elements of Art make in an artwork. Some examples are regular, irregular, and random.

  34. Rhythm • Regular- Elements happen at set intervals and in a predictable fashion. • Irregular- Elements are set in varying intervals in an organized fashion. • Random- Elements are set in an unpredictable and seemingly un organized fashion.
