  1. Principles of Design Adapted from my own experience, http://www.johnlovett.com/test.htm and http://char.txa.cornell.edu/language/principl/principl.htm

  2. Balance Balance Emphasis/ Dominance Variety Rhythm Good design requires balance. You want to balance the visual interest. Different colors, shapes, and sizes create different degrees of interest. It is the distribution of interest that you need to control.

  3. Balance Balance Emphasis/ Dominance Variety Rhythm • You can achieve balance symmetrically or asymmetrically. • Symmetrical balance can be described as having equal "weight" on both sides of a centrally placed fulcrum.

  4. A large shape close to the center can be balanced by a small shape close to the edge. A large light toned shape will be balanced by a small dark toned shape (the darker the shape the heavier it appears to be). Balance Emphasis/ Dominance Variety Rhythm

  7. Balance Emphasis/ Dominance Variety Rhythm Which kind of balance do these images have?

  8. Don’t be so negative!! Balance Emphasis/ Dominance Variety Rhythm • You can sometimes use nothing to balance something. Negative space has visual interest if used properly.

  9. Emphasis or Dominance You need a focal point in your design: A major point of focus. You can use shape, size or color to create variety and focus in a design. Balance Emphasis/ Dominance Variety Rhythm

  10. Balance Emphasis/ Dominance Variety Rhythm

  11. Emphasis Balance Emphasis/ Dominance Variety Rhythm • Keep in mind the color of text. It needs to be legible against the background. • If the background is light, make the text dark. If the background is dark, make the text light.

  12. Variety Repetition with variation is interesting, without variation your design can become monotonous.  The five squares above are all the same. They can be taken in and understood with a single glance. When variation is introduced, the five squares, although similar, are much more interesting to look at. They can no longer be absorbed properly with a single glance. The individual character of each square needs to be considered. While creating variety, don’t lose unity. The elements of your design need to have enough similarity in size, shape or color to maintain unity, AND you need to have enough variety to keep it interesting. Balance unity and variety. Balance Emphasis/ Dominance Variety Rhythm

  13. Rhythm Balance Emphasis/ Dominance Variety Rhythm • Rhythm refers to repetition and patterns.
