  2. Author Background: • William Golding was born on September 19th1911. • He went to college at Brasenose College, Oxford to pursue a degree in human sciences and later changed his major to Literature. • After college he became a teacher. • He married his wife shortly before the declaration of WWII. • He wrote “Lord of the Flies” in 1954. • In 1983, he won anoble prize for literature.

  3. Symbols: • The conch shell- the shell becomes a symbol of order and civilization in the novel. It serves as a mediator in the meetings. • Piggy’s glasses- they symbolize intelligence and knowledge. • Signal fire- becomes the only connection between the boys and civilization. • The beast- this stands for the human savagery.

  4. Theme #1: • Expect the Unexpected: • This theme fits into the book in many ways. At the beginning, the boys got along and wanted to work together to survive on the island. Later in the book, the boys started fighting and couldn’t agree on how they should live or how things should be done in order for them to be rescued. Due to the fighting the boys end up splitting up and forming two separate groups on opposite sides of the island. Jack and his clan end up hunting Ralph like an animal, after they captured Sam and Eric, and Ralph’s life is in danger. In order to flush Ralph out from the forest, the savage clan sets the whole island on fire. Thankfully the boys are rescued by a naval officer who saw the huge blaze. The boys can finally stop living like animals and go back to civilization. The boys went from living and working together to fighting and having their group break up, lessening their chances of survival.

  5. Theme #2: • Do Not Take Life For Granted: • In the book, the boys talk about their life at home and how things used to be before they became stranded on the island. After the group splits up, Ralph really feels the reality of what’s happened sink in. He knows the chances of getting rescued is slim and that chance decreases when the boys split up and move to separate sides of the island. Jack never really seems to take their situation seriously. He seems to never really grasp the reality that they could actually die on this island. Jack focuses more on leadership and hunting when he should focus on making and maintaining a signal fire. Jack makes a game out of their situation. Ralph and Piggy know that they must make a fire in order to signal a ship so they can be rescued. There are no adults on the island which means the kids are in charge and must defend for themselves. Ralph realized that the guidance of adults is a very important aspect in his life that every one of the boys takes for granted.

  6. Vocabulary word: • Tempestuously- stormy: characterized by violent emotions or behavior. (chapter 5)
