  12. World of Work is.... .... a globally unique labour market matching model of Higher Education that aims to help all students prepare for their transition from University into employment or further study …. giving students “more than a degree”

  14. World of Work is.... • The World of Work programme at LJMU is a new approach to Higher Education, impacting on how we structure and operate all our undergraduate programmes, for around 25k students

  15. World of Work Skills • Knowing about yourself • Knowing about organisations/companies and jobs in the sector you are interested in • Showing evidence and skills that you can work effectively at graduate level in these jobs

World of Work Skills Certificate Process How to get a World of Work Skills Certificate Write a personal statement which demonstrates World of Work skills Bronze Self Awareness Silver Organisational Awareness Gold Making Things Happen Complete an employer interview • Bronze, Silver and Gold are formative stages, completed by submission and feedback • Certificate is achieved by a successful interview with an employer • To be eligible to progress to employer interview, Gold statement must meet all the “Making Things Happen” criteria

Employer Involvement • Supporting curriculum delivery in all faculties across the university, by offering Work Related Learning (placements, site visits, case studies, guest speakers, work shadowing) • Training to become interviewers for the World of Work Skills Certificate • Brokerage Team at the Centre co-ordinate these links for the whole of the university

  24. Employer Involvement To date, we have: • 150+ verifiers trained • 1200+ employers engaging across university

  25. Library and Student Support Staff • Learning Resource Centres are hubs for student activity • Collaboration with Library and Student Support Staff is therefore essential

Library and Student Support Staff • Essential partnership – L&SS staff are often the first port of call for student queries • Regular updates and training provided to L&SS staff, about our services and technical developments • Using Learning Resource Centres for one to one interviews with careers and employability advisers • Appointment booking - L&SS staff assist in booking these adviser interviews • Careers information integrated into the main LJMU library catalogue

  27. Academic Staff • Influence of academic tutors on students is paramount • Engagement and support of colleagues in faculties is therefore essential

Academic Staff • Faculty and curriculum support - 120 hours of Careers Adviser time per semester for each faculty • Academic guidance/support on World of Work Skills and embedding/integration in the curriculum • Development and delivery of student sessions within academic programmes • Dissemination of good practice across university • Access to Centre facilities for delivery of related workshops • Brokerage support for enhancing WRL opportunities and employer contacts in curriculum

  34. Where are we now? • Over 5,500 students now taking part voluntarily • University is making Bronze stage of the World of Work Skills Certificate compulsory for all undergraduate students in 2012
