  1. The Roman MissalWhat does this look like for teachers?

  2. Prayer Good and gracious God, Open our eyes , our ears and our hearts that we may better understand the words and prayers of the Mass. Send your Holy Spirit To help us know you better To recognize your presence in the Mass and in our daily life. We ask this through Christ our Lord . Amen

  3. HISTORY • Roman Missal always published in Latin • Translated in the vernacular languages in 1974 • Languages such as Italian and French received a more accurate first translation • In 2001, the Vatican issued new principles for directing the translation • 2010, this third edition was approved for use in Canada • November 27th 2011, the first day of use, first Sunday of Advent

  4. WHY?? The new missal offers a more literal translation of the official Latin text It more clearly translates some Scripture passages used in the liturgy, and is more poetic in places The language is more formal and requires some explanation to young students

  5. The Order of Mass remains the same... Introductory Rites The Liturgy of the Word The Liturgy of the Eucharist The Eucharistic Prayer The Communion Rite Concluding Rite

  6. CHANGES

  7. Responses are better aligned with scripture ● There are more affirmations of God’s mercy. ● Father is used to address God less frequently. ● There is more use of the phrase “we pray.” ● There are more expressions that denote our unworthiness. ● There is more emphasis on God’s power. ● The vocabulary is more extensive. ● The prayers texts are more singable.

  8. Some examples of the changes… “And with your Spirit.” (Introductory Rites: Greeting) . . he took the chalice . . .” (Eucharistic Prayer at consecration) Priest “Lord I am not worthy for you to enter under my roof.” (Communion Rite: Invitation to Communion)

  9. Penitential Act Second Edition I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do. Third Edition I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (And striking their breast, they say ) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault.

  10. Parish Pew Cards • Local parishes are providing pew cards so students can easily begin to follow during mass • The TCDSB has received 1300 copies to share among schools (approx 6 per school) from Novalis

  11. Please use the Canadian edition of resources.... • Most US publications include the Nicene Creed • In Canada, most parishes use the Apostles Creed • Our Born of the Spirit, Grade 7 and 8 curriculum is based on understanding the Creed

  12. Remember... • Only the mass responses have changed

  13. Teacher’s Role • Discuss changes and why • Point out changes either using a pew card or PPT • Give examples of scripture to support change as in the scripture story of the Roman Centurion at Communion • Encourage students to follow along at mass on pew cards • Explain new vocabulary

  14. What does this require of you? • Visit the www.romanmissal.caor www.archtoronto.org • Music teachers to enter in dialogue with priest or music director to confirm what Memorial Acclamation and Gloria is to be used to ensure consistency • Dialogue with parish priest to ensure Advent Celebrations are aligned with new changes (programs)

  15. It all takes time... Parishes have been directed to instruct parishioners slowly of changes since early Fall • Focus on one part of mass at a time • Look at parts children are most familiar with • Be patient
