  2. Growing up • He tried to join the German army on August 2, 1914, but was only 160 cm (5 feet 3 inches) tall and did not qualify. • Udet was posted to the 26 Württembergischen Reserve Division as a "messenger rider." After injuring his shoulder

Growing up (cont.) • Udet tried to return to the fighting, but was unable to get into the pilot or aircraft mechanic training offered by the He learned that if he were a trained pilot, he would be immediately accepted into the air force. • Udet obtained his civilian pilot's license at the end of April 1915 and joined the German Army Air Service.

  4. German Skies • He learned to attack aggressively and made a number of kills, downing his first French opponent on March 18, 1916. • Udet won the Iron Cross First Class. • Udet was the highest scoring German ace to survive World War I.

  5. Victories In Hostile Skies • On 26 July 1917, he transferred to Jasta 37 where he scored 15 victories. From there he transferred to Jasta 11 in March 1918 and Jasta 4 in May 1918. • He could manuver his plane better then any of his opponents
