  2. In the beginning… • Born on October 4, 1903, in Ried im Innkreis, Austria • Obtained law degree from Graz University in 1926

  3. Early Nazi Actions • Joined Austrian Nazi Party in 1932 • Became head of the Austrian SS in 1935 • In 1938, he was elected to the Reichstag and appointed State Secretary for Security matters for his success in Anschluss.

  4. Major Nazi Activities • In 1940, Kaltenbrunner had much to do with the development of the Mauthausen KZ concentration camp.

  5. Major Nazi Activities Cont… • Agreed with Himmler to establish gas-chambers for execution in concentration and extermination camps in 1942

  6. Major Nazi Activities Cont… • In 1943, Kaltenbrunner was appointed Chief of the Security Police and Sicherheitsdienst, or SD, for the Reich Security Main Office, or RSHA.

  7. Major Nazi Activities Cont… • In 1944, the decoration known as the Knight's Cross of the War Merit, Cross with Swords, was given to General of the Police Dr. Ernst Kaltenbrunner, Chief of the Security Police and the SD.

  8. Major Nazi Activities Cont… • During Kaltenbrunner's term in office as Chief of the Security Police and SD, multiple crimes were committed by the SIPO and SD related to policy established by the RSHA or orders issued out of the RSHA for all of which he was responsible by virtue of his office.

  9. The End of a Villain • Found guilty on counts 3 and 4, or war crimes and crimes against humanity. • Hanged on October 16, 1946
