  2. Education Initiative • MISSION: To establish the King County Library System as an integral partner with schools in helping students achieve academic success. • MESSAGE: Libraries Raise Student Achievement

Research Findings • There is a 90 percent probability that a child will remain a poor reader at the end of the 4th grade if the child is a poor reader at the end of 1st grade. • Knowledge of alphabet letters at entry into kindergarten is a strong predictor of reading ability in 10th grade. • Children who start school behind and typically stay behind. Their lives at risk.

  10. Research on Literacy • Children who are read to three times per week or more (for about 20 minutes) do much better in later development than children who are read to less than three times per week.
