  1. Results of a Quick Survey of Planned, New, and Evolving Health Sciences LibrariesSelected Graphs and Comments Australia, US, Canada Monday, June 30, 2008 N = 25 Survey Monkey & Jacque Doyle

  2. I wish I had known… • (these are questions we would STILL like the answers to...) Key stakeholders (particularly within the University), which students will be served (level, program, etc.); how to get integrated into the planning process • As a new employee, I would have liked to know the organizational hierarchy, who to go to for help, for ordering, how to get things done (ie purchased) most efficiently. Being an employee of a university w/ multiple campuses and corporate offices has made this information gathering more difficult. • As Medical Librarian I commenced duties a year ago. I believe the HMLH could have benefited from my planning input, nevertheless the outcome is highly successful. • How hard it is to actually get what is wanted by faculty in digital format. • I am at the beginning of the planning process, and I wish that I knew more about the resources (human, information and education) in the region, in order to avoid duplication of effort. • I have been involved for the past 3 years in long range planning for medical complex which will include a new medical library..have visited new acad med ctr educ bldgs with 6 deans and vp health affairs in past 3 years and included in planning groups. • Length of time to work through HR hiring process. • N/A • So far we are doing reactive planning, as University priorities for this 117 acre campus four miles from Yale central emerge. • The ultimate plan for a finalized library (currently we are in an inadequate location and space for an undetermined amount of time) • We are at the beginning, but are learning quickly thanks to kindness of many librarians and health professionals recently contacted. • We are currently looking at opening a 'branch' library as a family resources center in the new Golisano Children's Hospital scheduled to open in July 2009. Wish I had known that this was 1) an unfunded mandate and 2) that senior administration was not unanimously in support of patient centered care principles • Wish I had more input on the space we were allocated.

  3. Questions not asked on survey • At some point down the line I am interested in questions of digital resources, online organization of these resources, participation of librarians in curriculum development, instruction - library based or part of curriculum, support of distance students. • Budget Negotiating salaries for newly created positions in support of new branches, etc. • I assume the location in Q1 refers to the new library. :-) What, if any, relationship is there to a "parent" library. • I think that a future survey would be useful for getting more details on exactly where each of us is: staff size and composition, databases, the usual statistical details. This survey comprises a succinct and auspicious start! • I would have put the background info included in your email to the Medlib list at the top of this survey. • My understanding is that this is simply an expression of interest in forming a group!? • The questions seemed to be directed to academic medical libraries. I fall between the cracks - I am academic, but also clinical, serving a comprehensive cancer center. So I didn't feel the categories fit me. However, I think I have much to contribute to any one planning a new library. I've done several renovations including planning the new facilitity. So maybe questions about renovations or smaller scale types of building/library planning would be appropriate. • -What are the 2-3 most important things you learned going through this process? -At what point did you become involved? and was it by invitation, proactive needling, or serendipity - How involved with the process are you and has your involvement changed (for better or worse) • What resources are you currently developing? Ex: e-journals to be identified, databases to be identified and e-books to be identified.

  4. Comments, suggestions • Development of a consortium group for discount pricing if possible may be very helpful. • This is very timely. Thank you. I need startup planning costs/resources at this point. • This is much needed. Not just for myself, but for the others who are out there and occasionally call me for help and advice on which I am sadly short. • Again, we are on the periphery of this group but could become very active if developments occur. I apologize for being so vague but that is where we are at this point. Thank you for getting this going.

  9. Other roles specified by respondents • (consult) answer questions and make contributions based on my personal experience (consult) • (consult) I can provide advice/assistance to anyone who is planning to start a library from the ground up • ...from a distance and from an Australian perspective! • ask questions, look for ideas • hard to answer this right now as we don't have a specific role to play and feel I have more questions than answers! definitely interested in being part of the group and being as active as possible. • I am somewhat interested in the discussion, but I may have a different agenda. I am interested in finding out about CLOSING a branch. Although we are not immediately faced with this issue, we have two branch libraries that are not used heavily and we may be faced with closing them in the future. • Injection of self-deprecating humor and anecdotes • Much of my involvement will depend on internal developments here but I'd like to be kept in the loop. • Not sure how relevant my role can be considering I'm in Australian and my situation doesn't seem to fit your line of questioning. Would be happy to actively contribute if you feel I can be of help. • not sure...as I am interested in the service agenda, not the building code. • will wait to see if there's anything I can add to the discussion
