  2. MORTALITY RATE & CAUSES OF DEATH • The mortality rate increases with age • Causes of death is different for different age groups under 60 • ACCIDENTS • HOMICIDES • SUICIDES

  3. Those over 60 have an increase chance • Heart Disease • Cancer • Alzheimer's

  4. Common Health Conditions • Acute Conditions-Short Term • Common Cold • Influenza (flu) • Infections • Short term intestinal upsets

  5. Chronic Conditions-Longer Lasting • Heart Disease • Arthritis • High Blood Pressure

  6. Disability Defined: The extent to which an individual is unable to perform. • Basic self-care activities/ Daily Living • Shifting from bed to chair • Bathing • Dressing • Using the toilet

  7. Instrumental Activities of Daily Living • Complex everyday tasks • Preparing meals • Shopping • Light house work • Laundry • Using transportation • Handling own finances • Using the telephone • Taking medications

  8. Statistics • Disability Occurrences 5% in ages 18-44 12% in ages 45-64 20% ages 65 and older have at-least one type of IADL Community Dwellings (lives at home alone) 81% of women 65 and older 90% of men still live at home 5% live in nursing facilities

  9. Typical Causes of Death • Cardiovascular Disease • among top in adults • Blockage of the coronary artery • From smoking • Family history • Plaques of fat tissue deposits • Atherosclerois caused by inflammation

  10. Causes of Death • Cancer second leading cause • Rapid division of abnormal cells that invade tissues and then spread - breast cancer - colon cancer - lung cancer - bone cancers

  11. Controlling Healthy Living • Tobacco use/Smoking • Obesity • Sun Exposure • Chemical and Radiation Exposure • Sexually Transmitted Disease • Sedentary Life Styles • Excessive Alcohol Use • Being over 50 • Family History

  12. Diabetes • Diabetes defined: a hormonal condition in which the body does not produce enough insulin to utilize the glucose produced by the digestive system • Related to heart disease • Stroke • Causes blindness • Kidney disease • Amputations of limbs • Birth defects

  13. Type 1-vs-Type 2 • Type 1 • Mostly found in juveniles • Pancreous can not produce insulin at all • Increase chances of fatality or disability • Weight loss/gain issues

  14. Type 2 • Usually associated with middle to older age • Obesity and physically inactive • Belly fat • Can be controlled by insulin replacement • Can be reversed with diet and exercise

Alzheimer • Fifth leading cause of death among older adults 65+ • Alzheimers defined: • Caused by progressive deterioration of certain parts of the brain. • Loss of cognitive ability and physical function • Risk factors • High cholesterol • High blood pressure • Sedentary lifestyles • Tobacco use • Family history

  16. Dementia • Dementia defined: category of conditions that involve global deterioration in intellectual abilities and physical function. • Types of illnesses associated with dementia: • Multiple strokes • Parkinson Disease • Single head trauma • Manic depression • Advanced stages of AIDS

  17. Drug intoxication • Hypothyroidism • Tumors • B12 difficiency • Anemia • Alcohol abuse

  18. Anxiety Disorders • Anxiety defined: feelings of fear and threat when there is no obvious danger present. • Common Anxiety Disorders:(PTSD) an emotional reaction to past trauma. • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: involves guilt and anxiety over certain thoughts and impulses.

  19. Conclusion • Men and women have different patterns of both physical and mental health problems. • Men have shorter life expectancies • Higher rates of life threatening physical disease • More mental disorders involving substance and alcohol abuse. • More impulse control disorders

  20. Women have more chronic diseases and higher rates of major depression and anxiety disorders. • Behavior patterns can lead to cardiovascular disease and early death. (Type A-over achievers) • Hostility patterns (read page 94) • Optimisms (read page 94)
