  5. Lesson 3-1 Home Keys (fdsajkl;) In this Lesson You Will: 1. Consider the arrangement of your work area and keying position. 2. Learn control of home keys (fdsajkl;). 3. Learn control of the Space Bar and ENTER key. Chapter 3

  6. Work Area Arrangement • Arrange your work area by placing the: • Keyboard directly in front of the chair, front edge of the keyboard even with the edge of the desk. • Monitor for easy viewing. • Book at the right of the keyboard. Chapter 3

  7. Keying Position When you use a keyboard: • Keep your fingers curved and upright over the home keys. • Wrists low, but not touching the keyboard. • Forearms parallel to the slant of the keyboard. • Body erect, sitting back in the chair. • Feet on the floor for balance. Chapter 3

  8. Home-Key Position The home keys are a s d f for the left hand and j k l ; for the right hand. Chapter 3

  9. Keystroking and Spacebar • When you key, tap each key lightly with the tip of the finger. • Keep your fingers curved. • The Space Bar is used to place a space between words. • Tap the Space Bar with the right thumb. Chapter 3

  10. Enter Key • The ENTERkey is used to return the insertion point to the left margin and move it down one line. • The marginis the blank space between the edge of the paper and the print. Tap the enter key once to move the insertion point down one line. Chapter 3

  15. Plan for Learning New Keys Standard Plan for Learning New Keys Find the new key on the keyboard chart provided. Look at your keyboard and find the new key on it. Study the picture at the left of the practice lines for the new key. Note which finger is used for the key. Curve your fingers; place them in home-key position (over fdsajkl;). Watch your finger as you reach to the new key and back to home position a few times. Keep your finger curved. Key the set of drill lines according to the directions provided, keeping your eyes on the copy as you key. Chapter 3

Find Words Keyed Score • A standard word in keyboarding is five characters. • These five characters can be letters, numbers, symbols, or spaces. • Each group of five characters is shown by the number scale under lines you key. • One measure used to describe keying skill is the number of words you key in a certain amount of time, such as a minute. • The number of standard words keyed in 1' is called gross words a minute (gwam).
