  4. Question # 2 • Explain how European partitioning in SWA, after the breakup of the Ottoman Empire, has caused conflict in the region.

  5. Question # 2 Answer • The Ottoman Empire (Turks) once spread throughout the Middle East and across north Africa. The Ottomans sided with Germany in WWI and lost. The victors, like Britain, divided up the Ottoman lands for themselves. The British took control of the land called Palestine. The British allowed Zionists to move back to the area, enraging the Palestinians. After WII, the Zionist were given a part of the land – renamed Israel.

  6. Question # 3 • If someone is an Arab, are they Muslim? Why or why not?

  7. Question # 3 Answer • NO! Because Arab is an ethnic group – people who share the same traditions, language and culture and Muslim is a religious group – people who share the same belief system.

After the death of Muhammad, there was a disagreement within the Muslim community about who should lead this new religion. • Shia wanted a family member. • Sunni thought any good Muslim could lead • Over the centuries, other difference have developed • Most Shia live in Iran • Most Muslims are Sunni

  12. Question # 6 • Explain how a low literacy rate affects a country’s standard of living?

  13. Question # 6 Answer • When a country has a low literacy rate (number of people who can read and write) they can not have highly skilled jobs. Typically, low skilled jobs do not pay well. This means that the people are not making much money, they are not spending a lot of money, and the economy is weak. The standard of living will be low.

  16. Question # 8 • How has the distribution of oil affected the development in SWA?

  17. Question # 8 Answer • Oil is a rare commodity. It is not found everywhere. It is also not evenly distributed throughout the Middle East – some countries have a lot (Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kuwait) while others do not (Israel, Jordan, Lebanon). • In the 1920s, the world demand for oil increase dramatically and the middle east has an influx of money • Some countries use their oil money to improve their countries – better infrastructure and education. While other countries, the leaders have used the oil money to enrich themselves instead of their people. • Some countries that do not have oil have had a hard developing their economies and had to rely on other industries (Israel) • Some countries that do not have oil have not been able to develop a strong economy and the standard of living is low.
