  3. Geography • There are many miles of sandy beaches along the coast. • The land here is flat and low. • In the Low Country you will find wetlands such as marshes and swamps. • The climate is warm and moist here.

  4. Animal Life • The Loggerhead turtle makes its home in the dunes along the coast. • Because the loggerhead is endangered, there are laws to protect them in South Carolina. • The white-tailed deer can be found living in abundance. Art by Parker

  5. Plants • Evergreen forests can be found in the Low Country. • Tall palmetto trees like the warm Low Country climate. • The Venus Flytrap, a plant that eats insects, can be found growing in this region.

  6. Carolina Gold • The flat land and the warm climate in the Low Country have always been good for farming. • The first cash crop of South Carolina was Carolina Gold, better known as rice.

  8. Grand Strand This curved area of coast is one of the longest unbroken beaches in the world. Myrtle Beach is part of the Grand Strand. Charleston The location of South Carolina’s first capital. The city was named after King Charles II. It is a busy port city.

  9. Hilton Head Island This lighthouse was built in 1970 and has become a symbol of South Carolina. Francis Beidler Forest These swamps are a wildlife sanctuary for a variety of plants and animals. Art by Autstin W.

  10. Charleston City Market This tradition of making coiled, handmade baskets from sweetgrass was brought over with the slaves from Africa. These baskets are still made in the Low Country of South Carolina.
