Acne usually happens when there is some blockage in a pore or hair follicle. Depending on how the pore gets blocked, whether it gets inflamed or not and if the walls of the hair follicle are compromised, you can classify the pimples in different ways. Let’s take a look at the anatomy of skin to understand this further.
The Hair Follicle What makes a hair follicle: Hair - consists of the hair root and a shaft. A hair root has a bulb, papilla, and matrix. Pore - there are sweat pores and oil pores. The oil pores are the one where the hair grows. Sebaceous duct and gland - tiny tubes through which the sebum, produced by the glands reaches the inside of the pore.
Understanding the Skin Layers Dermis Dermis, consisting of the sebaceous glands, is a deep skin level in which the nerves, blood vessels, and glands are. The blood vessels feed the skin with nutrients, the nerves signal what needs to be done and the glands secrete their substances which enable the skin to function well.
Epidermis Being the top layer of your skin, it is where the skin cells originate, go through their life cycle, die and shed. It consists of below layers:
• Stratum germinativum or stratum basale, where the cells are formed • Stratum spinosum, releases lipids and replaces keratin • Stratum granulosum, creates a protective, waterproof layer of oil • Stratum lucidum, present only in hand and feet skin • Stratum corneum, top layer of skin where dead cells are replaced by new ones
So what causes the pimples? It’s the skin cells and the bacteria. Our skin consists of a bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes which, otherwise harmless, overgrows and causes infections. The cause for their growth is skin cells blocking the hair follicles, and the infection they create are the pimples.
So now you know why you need to wash your face and keep the skin clean!
