Flight Safety Status AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - April 2007
Phase II Flight Safety Review • We are “Penciled In” for a May 21-25, 2007 Phase II Safety Review with the Payload Safety Review Panel. • Won’t be in “Ink” on the PSRP Calendar until we submit the Phase II Safety Data Package. • Required to have the Phase II Safety Data Package complete and submitted before March 30, 2007. • Because of the package’s size (~1000 pages) and the complexity of the AMS-02 the PSRP assigned Payload Safety Engineers have asked for an earlier delivery if possible to allow for time for their experts to review. AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - April 2007
Reminder • The Phase II Flight Safety Review is: • The formal audit of the AMS-02 design for compliance with all the safety requirements and requirements imposed through safety. • Supposed to occur when the design is 80% complete and there is less than 20% built. • We are well past this point. • Where the verification approach for all hazard controls is reviewed and approved by the Payload Safety Review Panel. • The most detail oriented and grueling of the safety reviews. AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - April 2007
PSRP Review • We are going to be relatively unique in the PSRP’s recent experience • We are very large, very complex with a myriad of integrated systems that are not like what is commonly addressed in recent history • We have cryogenics and superconducting magnets • We are the first large payload to go on the ISS Truss • We are not an ISS Program or ISS Partner Payload AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - April 2007
PSRP Review History AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - April 2007
PSRP Review • More than Six Years will have passed between the Phase 0/I and the Phase II • The PSRP we met at Phase I has changed, and the PSRP of today does not know the AMS-02 and has different priorities and views. • Our package must be thorough, complete and accurate. • The Hazard Reports will be our signed contract with NASA for assuring the safety of AMS-02 during its mission. • The hazard reports need to be accurate. AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - April 2007
PSRP Review • When submitted the Payload Safety Engineers (PSEs) working for the PSRP will review package for appropriate content before officially approving us to be scheduled for the Phase II. • We have new PSEs • Mr. R B. Rehm (SAIC/GHG) • Mr. D. M. Santiago (SAIC/GHG) AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - April 2007
Flight Safety Data Package • The Flight Safety Data Package was baselined through the AMS-02 CCB in May 22, 2006 • Hazard Reports and the Text have been updated since and will have to be taken back to the CCB. • All revisions need to be in place prior to this CCB Review. We need everyone ready to say “Approved” when it arrives at the CCB, not modify it then with comment. AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - April 2007
Package Status • In general the package is in good shape. • We are still filling some holes in the data. • The package was a snapshot of what we knew a year ago. • Data in the SDP needs to be brought in line with today. • Includes the Descriptive Text • Includes the Hazard Reports AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - April 2007
Specific Needs • All Structural and Fracture Control Summary Tables of AMS-02-F01 need to be reviewed and updated for accuracy and completeness. • Applies to all hardware providers • The Pressure System Table in AMS-02-F03 must to be reviewed and updated for accuracy and completeness • This hazard report is dedicated to Scientific Magnetics Hardware AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - April 2007
Specific Needs • All Pressurized Systems Tables in AMS-02-F05 need to be reviewed and updated for accuracy and completeness • Applies to Scientific Magnetics, TRD Gas, TCS, TTCS systems and Cryocoolers. • TRD has indicated additional/changed components during this TIM, these need to be updated in tables and descriptions. • Schematics of pressurized systems in AMS-02-F03 and AMS-02-F05 need to be reviewed and updated for accuracy and completeness. • Applies to Scientific Magnetics, TRD Gas, TCS, TTCS systems and Cryocoolers. AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - April 2007
Specific Needs • HEATERS • Ulrich Becker has supplied an excellent table for all thermostatic control devices • All other Thermostatic devices used associated with Pressurized Systems are asked to follow suit. • TTCS Heat Pipes • TTCS Two Phase Loop (including Peltier Devices) • TTCS OHP • All other Heat Pipes with thermostatic control • CAB Loop Heat Pipe • Cryocooler AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - April 2007
Example:TRD Thermostat Table AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - April 2007
Specific Needs • Non-standard Proof Testing • Scientific Magnetics have established that a number of components can not be tested to the required 1.5 x MDP proof value. • Explanations need to be provided that can be attached to hazard report on why the 1.5 test can not be used and explain the plan for testing specific components at lower levels and the rest of the system to required levels. • If any other yet unannounced components can not meet this requirement, they must also discuss this and document for the package. AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - April 2007
Specific Needs • Pressurize System Graphics in AMS-02-F06 (and the text) of vents should be verified to be up to date representation of vent locations and descriptions. • Scientific Magnetics • Cryosystem • Warm Helium Gas Supply • TRD Gas AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - April 2007
Specific Needs • Sections of the text we’re fairly sure are out of date or at least not the most accurate. • TTCS, Section 5.13 • Figure 5.13.7.1-4 TTCS Tube Routing • Figure 5.13.7.2.1-1 TTCS Condensers • 5.13.7.2.3 Accumulator • 5.13.7.2.4 Pre-heaters • 5.13.7.2.5 Start-up heaters • 5.13.7.3 CO2 Freezing/Thawing • TCS • 5.13.8 CAB Thermal Control • TRD • 5.13.10TRD Gas Supply Thermal Control AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - April 2007
General Needs • EVERYONE • Please make sure that any updates to Materials Lists are Provided to ESCG/Chia Chang • Please read the text and hazard reports. • Provide required updates to the text and graphics • Check Graphics closely for old configurations, these need to be updated or if correct graphics not available, the divergence from flight must be detailed. • Please review quoted numbers and other specific data for accuracy • Please supply any TBD placeholders you can. AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - April 2007
General Needs • Everyone • If you have any verifications you want to try and close, contact Leland Hill or Chris Tutt • Anomaly Reports and Resolutions must be reported to the PSRP for Flight and Qual Hardware. Provide summaries that detail problem and resolution. Open anomalies or failures need to be provided and forward work described. AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - April 2007
Of course it’s perfect, but in case it’s not… • Latest versions of modified text and hazard reports will be available at: • url: http://ams-02project.jsc.nasa.gov/html/prephase2_SDP.htm • Please provide all corrections and update to ESCG/Leland Hill • Leland.Hill@escg.jacobs.com • Please provide excerpts or instruction and not a redlined file (they are too big and will have to be transferred to the master document).
