  1. Aroooooo! Prepositions Adventures in Time and Place! *Look out for the hamster howling on the roof next to the gerbil under the brick near the salamander in the gutter.

  2. Definition • A preposition is a word that establishes a relationship between words in the sentence and its object. • Ex. The gerbil in the rocket was wary of the blast. • The preposition is “in” and shows the relationship between its object rocket and the subject gerbil. gerbil in the rocket One small step for hamsterkind!

  3. The Prepositional Phrase • A preposition is only a preposition if it is a part of a prepositional phrase. A prepositional phase consists of the preposition, its object, and any word(s) that describe the object. • Ex. 1 The gerbil sprinted inside the maze. • Ex. 2 The gerbil sprinted inside. • In example 1 we can ask inside what? The object is maze. • However, in example 2, there is no object. In example 2 insideis an adverb, answering where? after the verb sprinted. Where is that cup? inside the maze. inside.

  5. Advanced • There are two types of prepositional phrases: • Adjective Phrases act just like… adjectives! • Ex. The hamster on the roof was fiddling. • On the roof describes the hamster. • Adverb phrases act just like… adverbs! • Ex. The gerbil looked at the cat with suspicion. • With suspicion describes how it looked. Um, a little personal space here, please.
