What is leukemia? • Leukemia is cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Large numbers of abnormal white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow. In 2013, more than 43,000 adults and 5,000 children and teens will be diagnosed with this disease in the US • Types of leukemia Acute lymphoblastic (lymphocytic) leukemia Acute myeloid (myelogenous) leukemia Chronic lymphocytic leukemia Chronic myeloid (myelogenous) leukemia
Causes • Unknown but doctorsmay believe its genetic.
Treatment • Treatments include chemotherapy, stem cell transplant, radiation therapy, blood and marrow transplant. • Drugs can also be used include imatinib, mesylate, dasatinib, or nilotinibt.
Signs and Symptoms • lack of energy • fatigue • anemia • prolonged fever • night sweats • unexplained bruises • prolonged bleeding tendencies • propensity to catch infections etc
Preventions • There is no real prevention, but you can stay away from things that might be associated with leukemia. • Exposure to benzene could help • Stop smoking or don’t start.
