  4. Types of Leukemia • Four types: Myelogenous acute  Myelogenous chronic  Lymphocytic acute  Lymphocytic chronic • Acute – develops fasts • Chronic – develops slow • Myelogenous - white blood cells called granulocytes • Lymphocytic – white blood cells called lymphocytes

  5. Risk Factors • No actual causes • Age • Previous cancer therapy • Smoking • Chemical exposure Benzene • Genetics Disorders (Down syndrome)  Family history • Blood disorders

  6. Symptoms • Flu like symptoms Headaches  Vomiting  Paleness  Fatigue / Weakness  Body pain / discomfort • Swollen lymph nodes, liver, spleen & gums • Night sweats • Frequent infections • Seizures • Bleeding / Bruising • Weight / Appetite changes

  7. Diagnosis • Family history • Physical exam swollen lymph nodes, liver & spleen • Blood tests  CBC (complete blood count) • Biopsy  removes bone marrow • Spinal tap  removes cerebrospinal fluid • Cytogenetics abnormal chromosomes

  8. Pictures of Diagnosis Above: Biopsy Top Right: Spinal tap Bottom Right: CBC

  9. Treatment • Chemotherapy standard • Biological therapy special immune cells • Radiation therapy localized disease • Stem cell / Bone marrow transplants • Surgery • Watchful waiting

  10. Pictures of Treatments Above: Stem cell transplantTop Right: Chemo drugs Bottom Right: Radiation

  11. Future Research • Two videos about new drug research Leukemia Breakthrough: Healthline Health and Wellness Videos

  12. History • Came from Greek words “Leukos” and “Heima” meaning white blood • Ancient Greeks discovered Leukemia in 4th century BC • Officially diagnosed by John Hughes Benett in 1845 • In 1913 it was further divided into four types • In 1970 it was declared that leukemia could be cured • 1960: 4% of children survived, today: 80% survival rate
