  2. A. Tundra Tundra Tundra How can a tundra exist in a tropical zone? Tundra Tundra • The tundra is the coldest biome. • Located in parts of Alaska, Canada, Europe, Asia and South America.

  3. Characteristics of Tundra 3. Average Temp: -60 - 50 F 4. The soil is often frozen. Frozen Soil called Permafrost. -Below Average Temperatures and Precipitation. -Very Few plants and animals -Permafrost, or permanent ice, usually exists within a meter of the surface.

  4. Precipitation 5. Annual precipitation is very low, usually less than 10 inches (25 centimeters).

  6. 3. Lichens are unusual organisms that often grow on exposed rock surfaces.

  7. 4. Cushion plants are more common in the tundra where their growth habit helps protect them from the cold.

  10. C. Animals-Fauna The frigid cold and deep snow makes life in the tundra very difficult.  Some have grown thick fur which turns white in the winter.
