  1. Report Writing Aims and objectives: This unit aims to equip the student with the abiltity To write reports. The focus will be on: Dipak V Parikh

  2. The process of report writing • Following stylistic appropriateness could with formal correctness • Reporting the concept of chronological sequencing while reporting Dipak V Parikh

  3. Developing the concept of chronological sequencing while reporting • Using language items while are important sequential relationships • introduction: A report usually tells about the events that have taken place in some order. Dipak V Parikh

  4. There are different kinds of reports. Newspaper reports, reporting on activities and events that have taken place in school,etc. What is a report ? It is a narrative from of writing which normally reports a sequence of events in some chronological order. Dipak V Parikh

  5. 2. How do we write a report? • There are some important characteristics common to all kind of report writing. • These are: stylistic appropriateness • correctness • 5 Dipak V Parikh

  6. Use of past tense • sequencing • chronological order • Look at the following sentences carefully. They are not in sequence. Rearrange them Dipak V Parikh

  7. and place them in the correct order. The fox jumped up and tried to pluck the grapes. Finally it gave up and declared that the grapes were sour. 3. IT tried again and again. 4. One day a fox saw some juicy grapes Hanging from the vine. Dipak V Parikh

  8. The correct sequence of the above can also be guessed by paying attention to sequence markers such as ‘once’, ‘again’ and ‘finally’. Time relationships between sentences can be signaled by using certain words . There are three major divisions of time relationships. Dipak V Parikh

  9. Previous to given time reference: • Earlier ,former, preceding, previous, already as yet, before ,first, formerly, so far , yet ,before that ,before then, until now • (B) Simultaneous to given time – reference: Dipak V Parikh

  10. contemporary, simultaneous ,at present, at this point, meantime, meanwhile, in the mean-time, now, presently, simultaneously. (C) Subsequent to given time-reference following, later, next, afterwards, again, immediately, since, then, after that. Dipak V Parikh

  11. DIFFERENT KINDS OF REPORT: • Missing person report: Look at the notes below. Then use the information to complete the report by writing suitable words or phrases in each space. • -three year old girl missing. Dipak V Parikh

  12. Mother found she was missing. • informed police. • DSP supervised probe. • interviewed residents. • interrogated suspect. • munna admitted and disclosed hiding. A three-year old girl was kidnapped by a neighbour for ransom. Dipak V Parikh

  13. The mother ----the police about the missing girl. A probe-- by the DSP. More than 30 residents------. • Ultimately, Munna, one of the residents of the colony, admitted to having committed the crime and disclosed---------. Dipak V Parikh

  14. (b) Reporting a conversion: Below is a conversation between Renu and Ravi. Complete the following report on what they discussed. Renu: Our new TV has developed a problem. Ravi: Is anything wrong? Renu: Yes, the picture is very blurred. Dipak V Parikh

  15. Ravi: What else? Renu: well, the sound is bad and there is a lot of disturbance. Ravi: We’ll have to get this set replaced. Renu told that ……Ravi asked her was wrong . She Said that ……and also the sound was bad… Ravi finally declared that they would have…… Dipak V Parikh

  16. (C) An accident report : while reporting an accident the following question should be kept in mind . - What sort of accident Was it? - Where did it take place? - Who was involved? - When did it happen? Dipak V Parikh

  17. - What happened to each person involved? - What was the outcome? Dipak V Parikh
