  1. HILL'S PROPOSITION: Friday March 24th “The Scriptures teach that a child of God may so sin as to be finally & eternally lost in Hell.” Affirm:Douglas W. Hill Deny:Roger Holland

  2. Of Terms In The Proposition DEFINITIONS The Scriptures– The 66 books of the Bible, Both Old & New Testaments (2 Tim.3:16f). Teach– To impart knowledge, to instruct. Child of God – One sanctified by the blood of Christ & a sharer in the Spirit of grace (saved) (Heb. 10:29). May so sin – The ability to rebel, free will to depart, to sin willfully (Heb. 10:26). Lost – End up in Hell for eternity, a punishment worse than death (Heb. 10:29).

  3. DEFINITIONS Heb. 10:19-21 19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; 21 And having an high priest over the house of God; 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let ushold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised)…

  4. DEFINITIONS Heb. 10:24-25 24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: 25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

  5. DEFINITIONS Heb. 10:26-29 26 For if wesin willfully AFTER that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, 27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. 28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: 29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who…

  6. DEFINITIONS Heb. 10:26-29 29 …whohath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judgehis people. 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

  8. What Is NOT In Dispute Mr. Holland’s Straw Man WHO SAVES WHAT SAVES God (1 Tim. 2:3). Grace (Eph. 2:8-9). Mercy (Titus 3:5). Christ (2 Tim. 1:10). Blood (Mt. 26:28; Rom. 5:8-9). Holy Spirit (Ti. 3:5). Love (John 3:16). Word of God (Js.1:21; Rom.1:16). Faith (Eph. 2:8-9). We BOTH Agree On These!

  9. What Is NOT In Dispute Mr. Holland’s Straw Man Works of Men / Merit (Part or Whole) (Eph. 2:9; Ti. 3:5; Rom. 3:23; Is. 64:6). Works of Law of Moses (Ro. 2:17; 3:19-20; Gal. 2:14ff). Works of Satan / Flesh (Gal. 5:19ff). We BOTH Agree These Do NOT Save!

  10. HOW DOES GOD OFFER SECURITY? HOLLAND: At The Point Of Faith, Before & Without Obedience. One Moment Is Enough! BIBLE: IN OBEDIENT & LIVING FAITH! (Rom. 1:16; 6:3f, 16-18; 16:26; Jas. 2:14-24) Holland Misdefines “Faith”!

  11. QUESTIONS For Mr. Holland 1. Can a believer (one saved by the blood of Christ) stop believing? • Does sin separate the believer from God? Does sin affect a believer’s relationship with God? 3. Can a son be disinherited? 4. Is security in a living or dead faith? 5. Are there conditions to REMAINING saved?

  12. QUESTIONS For Mr. Holland Holland MUST Say “NO” To These! 1. Can a believer stop believing? YES (Heb. 10:26-31)! • Does sin separate the believer from God? YES (Rom. 8:12-16)! 3. Can a son be disinherited? YES (Heb. 12:16-17)! 4. Is security in a living or dead faith? LIVING (Jas. 2:14-26)! 5. Are there conditions to REMAINING saved? YES (Lk. 8:13; Heb. 3:12-13)!

  13. John 3:16 FAITH Defined [Pistuo] Strong’s #4100 – “used especially of the faith by which a man embraces Jesus, i.e. conviction, full of joyful trust, that Jesus is the Messiah – the divinely appointed author of eternal salvation in the kingdom of God, conjoined with obedience to Christ…”(Thayer p. 511).

  14. John 3:16 FAITH Defined John 3:16 explained by Num. 21:4-9! 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

  15. John 3:16 FAITH Defined John 3:16 explained by Num. 21:4-9! “8 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a standard: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he seeth it, shall live. 9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it upon the standard: and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked unto the serpent of brass, he lived. (Num. 21:4-9)

  16. John 3:16 FAITH Defined John 3:16 explained by Num. 21:4-9! “Once healed, always healed”? “Once saved, always saved”? Serpents not removed (Num. 21:7). Serpent not removed (Rev. 12:9; 21:10ff; 1 Pet. 5:8-9). Remedy supplied (John 3:16). Remedy supplied (21:8). COULD BE BITTEN AGAIN & HEALED AGAIN! CAN SIN AGAIN & BE FORGIVEN AGAIN!

  17. Gen. 2-3 CONDITIONAL FELLOWSHIP IN FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD (Gen. 3:8). IN FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD (1 Jn. 1:5-7). GOD: “In the day you eat thou shalt surely die…” (Gen. 2:17). GOD: If you sin, you die (1 Jn. 1:6; 3:7-10, 14). SATAN: “Ye shall not surely die…” (3:4). (False Assurance IN SIN!) SATAN: “Once saved, Always Saved.” (False Assurance IN SIN!) Cast Out - Tree of Life (Gen. 3:22-24). Tree Of Life (Rev. 22:18-19) FREE WILL: (Rev.22:17)! FREE WILL: choice!

  18. PROV. 24:16 CONDITIONAL SECURITY For seven times doth the righteous fall AND RISE, And the wicked stumble in evil. (Prov. 24: 16) • What kind of righteousness is this? • Law of Moses? Perfect works? No! • But it includes RISING (Obedience!) • 2. To whom is security offered? Who is called “righteous”?

  19. Matt. 10:16-33 CONDITIONAL SALVATION “Behold, I send you forth as sheep…” (Matt. 10:16) “He that endureth to the end shall be saved.” (Matt. 10:22b) “But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.” (Matt. 10:33) 1. Jesus referred to SHEEP… 2. Jesus connects ENDURING with SAVED! 3. Jesus warns against denying Him!

  20. Luke 8:12-13 CONDITIONAL SALVATION 12 “Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. And those by the way side are they that have heard; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word from their heart, that they may not believe and be saved. 13 And those on the rock are they who, when they have heard, receivethe word with joy; and these have no root, who for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.” (Luke 8:12-13) A BELIEVER CAN STOP BELIEVING!

  21. Luke 8:14-15 CONDITIONAL SALVATION 14 And that which fell among the thorns, these are they that have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. 15 And that in the good ground, these are such as in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, hold it fast, and bring forth fruit with patience. (Luke 8) 1. Some believe, yet FALL AWAY! 2. Others believe & HOLD FAST!

  22. Luke 15:24, 32 CONDITIONAL LIFE BIBLE: “For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found…” (Luke 15:24) “But it was meet to make merry and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.” (Luke 15:32) 1. How was he DEAD? Physically or Spiritually? 2. Once alive always alive?

  23. John 8:31-32 CONDITIONAL LIFE 31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciplesindeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:31-32) 1. These were BELIEVERS! 2. They were told “IF YOU CONTINUE…” 3. This refers to FREEDOM FROM SIN (8:34)!

  24. John 10:24-26 CONDITIONAL "SHEEPHOOD" 24 Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly. 25 Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me. 26 But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.

  25. John 10:27-28 CONDITIONAL "SHEEPHOOD" 27 My sheephear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give untothem eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. 1. Who are Jesus’ sheep? Believers… 2. What does that involve? Hear & Follow… 3. Can sheep stray (Lk.8:12-15; Mt. 18:12f; 1Pet. 2:25)? THIS NECESITATES CONDITIONAL SECURITY!

  26. John 15:1-6 CONDITIONAL LIFE 1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. 2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruithe taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. 3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. (John 15:1-4)

  27. John 15:1-6 CONDITIONAL LIFE 5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abidethin me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. 6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forthas a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. (John 15:5-6) 1. Branches IN HIM may not bear fruit (v. 2)! 2. Branches IN HIM may not abide (v. 6)! 3. These are cast forth, WITHER & are burned!

  28. Acts 8:5-24 CONDITIONAL FORGIVENESS 5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. 6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did… 8 And there was great joy in that city. 9 But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery... 12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. (Acts 8:5-13)

  29. Acts 8:5-24 CONDITIONAL FORGIVENESS 14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: 15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost… 18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, 19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.

  30. Acts 8:5-24 CONDITIONAL FORGIVENESS 20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. 21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. 22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be FORGIVEN thee. 23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the BOND OF INIQUITY. 24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me. A BELIEVER’S HEART CAN SIN & PERISH! And need FORGIVENESS AGAIN!

  31. Rom. 8:1-2 CONDITIONAL FREEDOM 1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of lifein Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. (Rom. 8:1-2) 1. No condemnation to whom? - Those “in Christ Jesus” (Gal. 3:26-27). - “Walk… after the Spirit” (Rom.1:5; 16:26). - “FOR… the law… MADE ME FREE!” 2. If you STOPPED walking in this law, what would happen?

  32. Rom. 8:12-16 CONDITIONAL SECURITY 12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13 For IFyelive after the flesh, yeshall die: but IFye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that weARE THE CHILDREN OF GOD (Rom. 8:12-16)

  33. Rom. 8:35-39 CONDITIONAL SECURITY 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

  34. Rom. 8:35-39 CONDITIONAL SECURITY 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. “Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.” (Jude 21) As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you:continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. (Jn. 15:9-10). AGAIN IT IS WRITTEN…

  35. Rom. 11:19-23 CONDITIONAL SECURITY 19 Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in. 20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: 21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. 22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. 23 And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again.

  36. Rom. 11:19-23 CONDITIONAL SECURITY CONTEXT OF ROMANS 11:19-23: Grace (11:6) Salvation (11:11) Save (11:14) Reconciliation (11:15) Life from the dead (11:15) Holiness (11:16) Unbelief vs faith (11:20) Saved (11:26) Deliverance, taking away of sins (11:27)

  37. 1 Cor. 9:24-27 CONDITIONAL CROWN 24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. 25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. 26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: 27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. (1 Cor. 9:24-27)

  38. 1 Cor. 9:24-27 CONDITIONAL CROWN Castaway (1 Cor. 9:27) Adokimos (Strong’s # 96) unapproved, i.e. rejected; by implication, worthless, castaway, rejected, reprobate. Context is striving for an incorruptible crown! Paul says even he could lose that & be rejected!

  39. 1 Cor. 10:12-13 CONDITIONAL STANDING CONTEXT: Israel partook of the same spiritual rock, Christ (10:2-4). Yet were overthrown because of sin (10:5-11). Warning to “brethren” (10:1), Warning to “we” and “us” (10:6, 8, 9). • Why the warning if believers cannot fall? • Why did Paul include himself? • This deals with salvation in Christ! (10:3, 16, 33)

  40. 1 Cor. 10:12-13 CONDITIONAL STANDING 12 Wherefore let him that thinketh hestandeth take heed lest heFALL. 13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (1 Cor. 10:12-13) Partakers of Christ can be OVERTHROWN because of sin! It has happened before!

  41. 1 Cor. 15:1-2 CONDITIONAL SALVATION 1 Now I make known unto you brethren, the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye received, wherein also ye stand, 2 by which also ye are saved,if ye hold fastthe word which I preached unto you, except ye believed in vain. (1 Cor. 15:1-2 ASV) • BRETHREN – Received, stand & saved by the gospel! Believers! • CONDITION – “IF ye hold fast…”

  42. Gal. 5:1-8 CONDITIONAL GRACE 1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. 2 Behold, I Paul say unto you, that IFyebe circumcised,Christ shall profit you nothing. 3 For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. 4 Christ is BECOME OF NO EFFECT(1) untoyou, whosoever of you are justified by the law; yeare FALLEN FROM GRACE. (1)Severed, cut off, separated, put an end to.

  43. Col. 1:19-23 CONDITIONAL RECONCILIATION 19 For it was the good pleasure of the Father that in him should all the fulness dwell; 20 and through him to reconcile all things unto himself, having made peace through the blood of his cross; through him, I say, whether things upon the earth, or things in the heavens. 21 And you, being in time PASTalienated and enemies in your mind in your evil works, 22 yet NOW HATH HE reconciledin the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and… (Col. 1:19-23)

  44. Col. 1:19-23 CONDITIONAL RECONCILIATION 22 …without blemish and unreproveable before him: 23 IF so be that ye continue in the faith, grounded and stedfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel which ye heard… (Col. 1:19-23) • WHO – Those reconciled by the blood! • CONDITION – If you CONTINUE in faith! C. WARNING against “moving away”.

  45. 1 Tim. 1:18-20 CONDITIONAL PEACE 18 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, …that thou by them mightest war a good warfare; 19 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck: 20 Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme. • Can you “put away” & “wreck” what you do not have? • Delivered to Satan – but still saved???

  46. 1 Tim. 4:1-2 POSSIBILITY OF APOSTASY 1Ti 6:11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. 1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart (1) from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron… (1 Tim. 4:1-2) • Can you depart from something you were never in? (Army, Wife, Job, etc.) • B. Can one depart, listen to evil spirits, speak lies, seared conscience and STILL ENTER HEAVEN? (1)Revolt, desert, fall away, withdraw oneself.

  47. 1 Tim. 5:11-15 POSSIBILITY OF APOSTASY 1Ti 6:11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. 11 But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry; 12 Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith. [i.e. Broke their promise] 13 And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. 14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. 15 For some are already TURNED ASIDE after Satan.

  48. 2 Tim. 2:10-13 POSSIBILITY OF APOSTASY 1Ti 6:11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. 10 Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: 12 Ifwe suffer, we shall also reign with him: ifwedeny him, he also will deny us: 13 Ifwebelieve not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself. CAN A BELIEVER STOP BELIEVING? PAUL INCLUDES HIMSELF!

  49. 2 Tim. 2:16-18 POSSIBILITY OF APOSTASY 1Ti 6:11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. 16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. 17 And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; 18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow (1) the faith of some. CAN A BELIEVER LOSE THEIR FAITH? (1)Subvert, corrupt, overturn.

  50. “Once One Is Saved, He Is Always Saved.” Heb. 3:1, 12-14 OPPONENT SAYS: BIBLE: “Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling…” (Heb. 3:1) “Take heed, brethren, lest haply there shall be in any one of you an evil heart of unbelief, in falling away from the living God: but exhort one another day by day, so long as it is called To-day; lest any one ofyou be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin: for we are become partakers of Christ, IFweHOLD FAST the beginning of our confidence FIRM UNTO THE END…” (Heb. 3:12-14)
