Project Overview Space Exploration Second graders are passionate about space and are conducting their own ‘space exploration’ by reading about and researching the planets, the moon phases, our solar system, fractions, day and night and the seasons! Be watching for more details to come soon about how they will be presenting this information!

I Can: • Identify and use: compound words • Make new observations when there is disagreement among initial observations.  • Draw pictures and write brief descriptions that correctly portray key features of an object.  • Investigate by observing and then describe that some events in nature have a repeating pattern, such as seasons, day and night, and migrations. Reading Connections Our Moon Noise Level 1 • Monday • Discuss the Talk About It on pages 264 and 265. • Read Discover the Moon on pages 266 and 267 to learn your new vocabulary words. • Tuesday • Focus: Vocabulary and Classification and Categorization • Read The Moon on pages 268-287. • Wednesday • Focus: Compound Words • Continue reading The Moon on pages 268-287. • Begin the comprehension packet for The Moon. • Thursday • Focus: Study Personification and Imagery • Finish reading The Moon on pages 268-287. • Continue working on comprehension packet. Friday • Finish the comprehension packet for The Moon and turn into the reading file. Materials Needed Treasures Book, Pencils, Comprehension Packets Project Connection: Planets, Space, Moon phases

I Can: • Participate in shared research and writing projects • Research process and technology • Write and deliver a research report Writing:Research for Space Project Noise Level 1 • Monday • Find a book or website that has information about your topic for Space Night. Gather information for your topic and write the information in your own words in your research organizer. Be sure to record where you got your information. • Tuesday • Continue your space research. • Wednesday • Continue your space research. • Thursday • Continue your space research. • Friday • Complete your space research. Make sure you have 15-20 facts that you can use for your Space Night project. Materials Needed: Pencil, Paper, Computer, Space books Project Connection: Planets, Space, Moon phases

Self-Selected Reading/Accelerated Reader • I Can • Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension Noise Level 0 Choose a library book or a book of choice that you have not read. Be sure you picked a book that you can read alone. Silently read . After you finish your book, write the name of the book in your Data Binder. Be sure to fill in the information about your book in your binder. If you can answer all the questions in your Data Binder, get your laptop and log on to AR to take your test. Record your AR score in your Data Binder. • Materials Needed • Data binder • Book of choice

Follow the directions on Math Masters 254 Tuesday Use the cut out of the foot, ruler and decimeter to measure distances. Complete the page on class measurements using the different measuring devices. Wednesday Comparing Lengths of Objects Math Masters 264 Thursday Perimeter Solve the perimeter problems given at your station using inches, centimeters, and feet.
