  2. Begins in New England around 1800 • Why New England? • Geography- • Poor Soil- people left farms to find work • Many rushing rivers and streams to provide waterpower. • Many ports for shipping and trading.

  3. The American Economic System Develops • Capitalism – individuals put their capital, or money, into a business in hopes of making a profit. • Free enterprise – people are free to buy, sell and produce whatever they want.

  4. Major Elements: • Competition • Profit • Private property • Economic freedom

  5. New Technology • Scientific discoveries that simplify work. • 1793- Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. • Quickly and effectively removed seeds from cotton fiber. • Enabled one person to do the work of 50.

  6. Patent- • Gives an inventor the legal right to the invention and its profits for a certain period of time.

  7. The United States Economy Diversifies! • Northeast – Manufacturing/Factories • South and West - Agriculture and Farming
