  3. Key Concepts: • Sectionalism intensified due to a black majority in the Southern states, resistance to the abolitionist movement, growth of the northern industrial economy and in politics, a larger northern population allowed for larger representation in Congress.

  4. Denmark Vesey, a free black in Charleston, was accused of and executed for a planned revolt. The news of this revolt caused a great fear among whites and furthered tensions between the races.

  5. Slave codes that had been developed following the Stono Rebellion during colonial times were strengthened to better protect white society.
