  6. Community College System • For admission: • Community colleges will accept any student who is 18 years of age or older. • Community colleges require Math and English placement exams taken Spring of senior year • No SAT/ACT tests required Community Colleges • Sierra • American River • Sacramento City • Consumnes *Transfer programs to UC/CSU schools available

  7. CSU (Cal State Univ.) 23 campuses including: Sacramento State Chico State Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Sonoma State San Diego State Cal State Fullerton Long Beach State Humboldt State Cal State San Marcos For admission, CSU’s look most heavily at: GPA Test Scores *Exception is Cal-Poly SLO, which also considers: includes 9th grade grades bonus for extra college prep courses supplemental application demonstration of involvement in area of interest? Prefer the ACT CSU College System *For more information, visit www.csumentor.edu

  8. UC College System For admission, UC’s look most heavily at: Comprehensive Review • GPA • Test Scores • Strength of curriculum • Essays (Personal Statements) • Extracurricular activities UC (Univ. of Calif.) • UC Berkeley • UC Davis • UCLA • UC San Diego • UC Santa Barbara • UC Santa Cruz • UC Irvine • UC Merced • UC Riverside *For more information, visit www.universityofcalifornia.edu

  9. GPA/Grades for UC/CSU’s • Only A-G courses taken in grades 10th and above are used in GPA calculation • Only “C” grades and above in required college preparatory courses satisfy college requirements (including 9th grade) • If you have earned a “D” in a required A-G course, see your counselor for remediation options…you still have time to get back on track!

  10. Private College System • Private school admission requirements vary but can include: • Grades/GPA • Test Scores • Strength of curriculum (maintain thru Sr. yr.) • Activities (sports, clubs, jobs) • Leadership • Community Service • Essays (if required) • Interviews (some private schools) Private Colleges • BIOLA • USC • Stanford • Point Loma • Pepperdine • Univ. of San Diego • Loyola Marymount • St. Mary’s • University of Pacific

  11. College Visits – Do I Really Need to Do That This Year? • Schedule visits in the Junior year and in the summer before your Senior year • Check GBHS College Visitation Schedule (Career Center) • Attend Spring College Open Houses • Virtual tours available at www.collegeweeklive.com

  12. Get Organized • Use Naviance for the following: • Start to fill out Personal Profile (click on “About Me” tab) • Keep track of the following in the Personal Profile: • Volunteer work • Work record • Awards • As you use SuperMatch and research colleges, add those of interest to your list of “colleges I’m thinking about”

  13. Testing that should be done this year*We suggest taking SAT/ACT at least once by spring of 11th grade • Testing for all colleges • SAT 1 or ACT • SAT II Subject Tests (some private schools require them; they are no longer required for UC’s) • Some UC majors recommend subject tests. Check with each campus • Align test dates with the conclusion of a high level course taken in the subject area to be tested in • Tests are available in the following subjects: • English Literature, Math, History, Science, Foreign Language • Complete all testing this year; test again in Sr. yr. if needed (most colleges permit testing thru Dec. of Sr. yr.). • Colleges will take your best scores • PSAT • Listen to announcements to pick up results in December in the Career Center • Analyze strengths and weaknesses at PSAT website (noted on results printout)

  14. SAT/ACT • 4 scores sent for free (if indicated by date of test) • Extra scores sent for fee (handle online) • For CSU’s use code = 3594 for SAT • Using this code will make your SAT scores available to all 23 CSU’s • For the ACT, sending to one campus will cover all 23 campuses as they will share these scores • For UC’s send ACT/SAT scores to one UC only and those scores will be made available to all nine UC’s • No need to use “Score Choice” – colleges really will take your highest score without penalizing you for other lower scores (exception: SAT II subject tests) • NCAA Eligibility Center code = 9999 • GBHS school code = 051-106
