  1. Getting your Message Out to the World! Presented by: Rebecca MacfarlaneTurning Stones Coaching and Consultancy 7 June 2012

  2. About me • Rebecca Macfarlane, Owner of Turning Stones Coaching and Consultancy • Training and Development Professional • Specializing in leadership, organizational development and strategic planning for non profits and solo-entrepreneurs doing Good for the world. • A professional coach for 3 years • Living in Tennessee, USA after travelling the world for the last 10 years. (Not really, but I did spend a decade in the UK!)

  3. This class is about: • Helping you create a vision that is inspiring and will help you take your message of change into the world • Learning to start leading a movement • 3 Leadership skills you need to have to change the world • 4 Business Building skills you need to have to stay sane while you change the world • Finding the natural, easy way to get your message out to the world. + Some wonderful GOODIES just for coming along!

  4. Creating your Vision • What is a vision? • A short, sharp paragraph (3-5 sentences) which will: • Unify your tribe of followers • Focus you on what you need to do • Communicate what you’re about to others • Inspire you and others • Help you make decisions • Give you something to help measure your success

  5. Vision vs. Mission EXAMPLES: A world without poverty. Refresh the world. To provide jobs for the homeless. To make Coca Cola available to everyone in the world

  6. What you need first • Clarity on your Mission/Purpose • LOVE! Passion about your cause • Belief you can make a difference • Permission to dream If you can’t get excited, you won’t be able to get others to join the movement!

  7. Some examples • Which of these INSPIRES you? • Our vision is to create a better everyday life for the many people. We make this possible by offering a wide range of well-designed, functional home furnishing products at process so low that as many people as possible will be able to afford them. (IKEA) • Within the next five years, the Women's Centre will have helped create a safer, more harmonious community by helping women acquire the education, skills and resources necessary to build self-sufficient prosperous lives. • Our community enthusiastically promotes and enjoys healthy recreation and physical fitness activities. Our mountains and other natural features brand the region as the outdoor capital of the West.

  8. Some tips • It’s more about “I have a dream…” than “I will rule the tri-state area!” • Keep it simple. • No “business-speak” • Focus on how you want the world to change • Dream big! It might be more than you can deliver alone – but that’s ok!

  9. Communicating Your Vision • WHAT DOESN’T WORK: • Under-communicating • Just transferring information • Reasoning people when you need them to be bold and brave • Not “walking the talk” – creates cynicism and mistrust WHAT WORKS: • Keep it simple and heartfelt • Do your homework – know what people arefeeling • Speak to anxieties, confusion, anger and distrust • Clear, creative communication channels

  10. Some practice • How would you like your work to help change the world? • If you had unlimited resources to do what you do, what would be different in the world? How would it be better? • How can you raise the urgency of what you’re trying to do for people? Where is the need??

  11. Three Leadership Skills you need to Change the World: • Vision creation – being able to see the possibilities and get other excited about them. • Speaking from the heart – Being authentic and really painting a picture for others • Learning and Self-Development – Adopt the mantra, “I WILL FIGURE IT OUT!”

  12. Four Business Building Skills you need to change the world (without losing your sanity!) • Business planning/strategic thinking • Championing the Cause (not marketing!) • Living in the Now • Self Care = Business Love!

  13. The Roles you can play • Writer • Talker • Speaker • Teacher • Connector • Networker • Researcher • Evangelist Which of these best fits your natural style?
