  3. Satire • Fictional story about a serious matter/issue • Criticizes the government & world-wide issues • Wit • Intellectual humor • Irony • Verbal – sarcasm/lies (strong opinions) • Situational – situations are not expected

Allegory • Fictional story with a deeper meaning • Can be read on two levels • The story on the surface (read it as it is) • The underlying story (the real-life story it represents) • Extended Metaphor • Fictional comparison to real-life, well-known events in history • Symbolism • Characters, events, and ideas symbolize real-life people, events, and ideas
