  1. Anglo-Saxon (43 – 1435 AD)

  2. ca. 43-420 AD • Roman invasion and occupation of Britain (410 collapse of Roman Empire) Rome ruled from 1st to 5th century. • Rome left to protect itself against Germanic tribes, leaving the island vulnerable to Germans

  3. Anglos, Saxons, & Jutes • Britons fought Germans for years and lost. They were confined to the mountains in Wales.

  4. Christianity • In the fourth century, the country became Christian after Emperor Constantine converted in 375 AD. • It wasn’t until 597 AD that the first missionaries appeared. • Christianity brought books to the culture. • Many struggled with the new religion

  5. Danish Invasion • In the ninth century the Danes invaded England • The Battle of Maldon (an epic poem) was created to document the invasion. • The Danes came from the North but threatened the south.

  6. King Alfred (871-899) • Stopped the invasion by uniting the southern regions • He was key to preserving the history of England by translating text from Latin into West Saxon dialect

  7. “Middle Ages” • Indicates period of time from the collapse of the Roman Empire until the Renaissance. • “Medieval”, another term used to describe to this period, refers to anything made, written, or thought.

  8. Literature • Primarily oral (epic poems re-enacted by scops to perform for audience) • After 100 year war with France, England took pride in written literature

  9. Geoffrey Chaucer • First English poet to combine styles of French and Italian poetry into works.
