  2. What is Terrorism ? • In most cases deliberate and systematic use of violence against civilians, with the aim of advancing political, religious, or ideological causes. • Use fear to interfere with society to gain power. • With rise of technology terrorism has become a global threat

  3. U.S. Involvement in Terrorism • After the terrorist hijacking in 9/11 US took an active role on terrorism, since President George W. Bush declared war on terrorism. • Attacked the Taliban and al-Qaeda in Afghanistan. • “Operation Iraqi Freedom” also involved the US in Iraq to capture Saddam Hussein, and has kept the US deployed in the Middle East since then.

The Taliban and Al-Qaeda • Taliban, group of mujahedeen freedom fighters who fought the soviets and established the Islamic State of Afghanistan with Sunni majority, provided al-Qaeda with sanctuary and training grounds. • al-Qaeda, center of a global terrorism group led by Osama bin Laden, who was suspected to have directed 9/11, dedicated to anti-Americanism.

  5. Terrorism in the World • Is present in many countries around the world. • Anti-colonial conflicts in Algeria, and Vietnam, Israel vs. Palestine, Protestants vs. Catholics in Northern Ireland/ unification of Ireland, between revolutionary forces in Indonesia, Iran, Nicaragua etc.

The Cost of Terrorism • Thousands of people are killed in terrorist activity • Governments use billions of dollars to fund anti-terrorist activity • Terrorists usually not funded but when they are they have a potentially wide reaching range of influence, and capability to inflict terror on the world

  7. Global Impact of Terrorism • Economical Impact – 9/11 attack put American Economy in a Recession. Uncertainty caused by terrorism creates a lot of risk aversion, which has a lot of negative effects on the economy such as less investment, and less spending. • Social Impact – Creates a question of National Security, and fear in people.
