  5. Education Puritans • Literacy necessary to read Bible (Old Deluder Satan law) • Ministers needed higher ed. (Harvard) Great Awakening Education for life skills, not necessary for religion or ministry Enlightenment Needed to help perfect society

  6. Individual and the Government Great Awakening more democratic churches Carried over to civil life Puritans • Elite ruled church and state • Enlightenment • Eliteleadership BUT all have a role in ensuring against oppressive govt.

  7. Responsibility to Society • Great Awakening • conversion of all would better society Puritans • All are responsible for needs of the community • Enlightenment • individuals should seek to perfect society
