Step 1 – HE Academy ICS Development Fund Peer Mentoring: Student Project Managers • Proposal whereby stage 2 group-work activities were to be supported by stage 3 project managers. • Since 2003, peer mentoring has been fully integrated into our Software Engineering programme. • This single change has increased Software Engineering registrations by over 100% and has a positive (6%) impact on attainment. ‘The actual practical element of Project Management has been a wonderful experience. The lessons I’ve learned, not only about the Project Management process, but also about myself, have been incredible!’

Step 3: CETL ALiC • Funded as a Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning by HEFCE • The only one funded in the Computing discipline. • Capital £2.35 Million; recurrent £500K for 5 years. • Durham (with Newcastle, Leeds and LeedsMet). • Focus: • Group work • Projects and dissertations • Learning spaces

  6. SynergyNet • Devices for new learning spaces to support collaboration. • Funded through the Teaching and Learning Research Programme (EPSRC/ESRC) • Total fund value £1.5 Million over 5 years.

  8. Where is TEL now… • Largest research group in computer science • Currently has grants of £7 million • We have our own floor in a learning sciences building • Nominated for many prizes and awards • I was Awarded a personal chair in computer science in June this year. SO GO FOR IT!
