Imperialism 8th grade S.S. April 4-5 Miss Perry
Colonial Empires • European nations had been building empires since the 1400s. • Now that Germany and Italy were united, they too wanted to expand their empires. • Japan and the US were also expanding in the Pacific.
Causes of Imperialism Imperialism is the control of a region or country by another country. • Industrialization • industrial nations needed raw materials for their factories. • Many of these materials were plentiful only on other continents. • Europeans wanted to control these places. • Industrialists argued that colonies would provide nations with markets for their finished goods.
2. Nationalism • Citizens believed that a large empire increased their nation’s power Imperialists felt they had a duty to export their ‘superior’ culture to peoples they viewed as less advanced.
Empire Building in Africa • Before 1880, Europeans ruled only a few colonies in Africa. • 25 years later- almost all of Africa was controlled by European countries • France and Britain • Forced labor for Africans • Profits of natural resources for Europeans
Empire Building in Asia • Great Britain ruled over India and Burma • Russia expanded into Asia • France in SE Asia • Forced China to open itself to trade that favored Europeans
Japanese Imperialism • 1853- US sends naval force to Japan. • Matthew Perry in command • Negotiate treaty that would open Japan to American trade • Japan built strong military and took Korea and Taiwan from China
American Expansion • 1823- Monroe Doctrine • US would oppose any European efforts to re-colonize independent Latin American countries or interfere with them. • Allowed the US to become the dominant power in the region. • 1840s- gained CA and TX from Mexico • 1898- Philippines and Puerto Rico and HI • 1903- Panama canal(opened Atlantic to Pacific)
