  3. Divided into kingdoms and kings ruled each kingdom as they wanted. • Pope was the head of the church for all of western Europe. Let’s look at one of Europe’s most successful kings… Charlemagne. Western Europe

  4. Impressive and successful monarch in Europe! • Very tall- over 6’ • Always laughing • Knew everyone by name in his castle • People called him Charles the Great CharlemagneKing of the Franks

  6. One of the most important things Charlemagne did for the world was to turn his castle into a learning center - inviting scholars from all over the world to take up residence there.
