  28. CORK INDUSTRY HIKING ACTIVITY Wednesday, May 14th In the lateafternoon, the whole group enjoys a nice time hikingthrough the circularfootpathcalledLos Torros. Time to discovergrowing fruits, olives, chestnuts and cork. Raisingcattle, sheep and goats (as much for cheese as for meat). Oaks of variouskindabound, especiallyholmoaks and corkoaks, the acornsfromwhich are used to fatter up the pigs. Momisa, peaches and citruses of variouskind, wildcistus, lavender, thyme.

  29. TOURISM IN RURAL AREA Thursday, May 15th TRIP TO THE GREEN LAKE On Thursday, aftersomelessons, let’s trip to the Green Lake whichislocated in a naturalprotectedpark. This lakeprovides an important ressource for birdsbased in this area. The vegetationsurrounding the lakeis of mediterraneanscrublandvariety.

  30. TOURISM IN RURAL AREA TRIP TO THE GREEN LAKE Thursday, May 15th Sports instructors manage for the Comenius Students and Teachersoutdooractivities : canoeing, archery, zip line and ropetraversingthroughtrees, and general collective gameswhichstrengthen the cohesion of the group.

  31. TOURISM IN RURAL AREA TRIP TO THE GREEN LAKE Thursday, May 15th Students are taught about the local ecosystem. Meanwhileeveryonecanidentify a magnificentvariety of local flora and fauna (cork and evengreenoaks, polar ash, willow, maple, elm, older, myrtle, bramble, rosemary…). The mediterraneanclimate, the topology and geologycontribute to the factthatAndalucia has the highestnumber of species of flora and trees in Europe. The faunaisrich in otters, wild cats, genets, weasels.

IBERIAN PIG & PRODUCTS Monday, May 12th TRIP TO AN ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY CENTER IN THE NATIONAL NATURAL PARK SIERRA DE ARACENA AND PICOS DE AROCHE This naturalpark, near the Portuguese border, encompasses 184 000 hectares ; 90% of itiscovered by woodland of mainlyMediterraneanoaks. For avoiding to spoil the nature withhumanbacteries, each one has to wear a specialoversuit.

  34. IBERIAN PIG & PRODUCTS Monday, May 12th HERE WE ARE ! FIRST CONTACT WITH THE FAMOUS IBERIAN BLACK PIG IN A LOCAL FARM Sierra de Aracenaisfamous for itsrearing of Iberian black pigs. They use to searchacornsunder the oaktreesthatgivetheirhamits distinctive quality and thisspecialflavourparticularlyappreciated by gastronoms all over the world. The Iberian black pig has gotfolding down ears, long and thin legs, a long snout and a dark skin.

IBERIAN PIG & PRODUCTS Monday, May 12th COMING BACK TO ARACENA THE GROUP IS INVITED TO VISIT THE HAM MUSEUM This museumoffers a unique opportunity to learn more about the life cycle of the Iberianpig : fromwhen the acornsfall onto the ground in the pasture lands until the ham in the cellarsisready for eating.   37. SEVILLA’S HERITAGE TODAY IS THE SEVILLA’S DAY : REAL ALCÁZAR Tuesday, May 13th ArrivalatSevilleat 9h45. Let’s go for a guidedvisit of Real Alcazar. The participants are all the Comenius teachers and students and a San Blas 3rd class ESO E. The Real Alcazar of Sevilleis a royal palace, originally a Moorish fort. It is one of the best remainingexamples of mudéjar architecture. It isstill the oldest royal palace in use in Europe (the upperlevels are used by the royal family as the official SevilleResidence).

  38. SEVILLA’S HERITAGE Tuesday, May 13th LET’S CARRY ON MARIA LUISA PARK ! After a picnic lunch in the Maria Luisa Park, studentsjointheir international groups and participate to a contest all over the parkdiscoveringitswildlife. The Maria Luisa Park is a public parkthatstretchesalong the Guadalquivir River in Seville. It isSeville’s principal green area. It serves as a botanicalgarden. Over a hundredtreespecies are representatedwitheducational panels to inform the visitors.

SEVILLA’S HERITAGE Tuesday, May 13th WALK AROUND THE MOST EMBLEMATIC PLACES : CATEDRAL DE SANTA MARIA DE LA SEDE PLAZA DE ESPAÑA The Spain Square wasbuilt in 1928 for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. It is a landmarkexample of the Renaissance Revival style in Spanish architecture. Designed by Anibal González, this place is a hugehalfcirclewith buildings accessible by numerous bridges representing the 4 ancientkingdoms of Spain. The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See, betterknown as SevilleCathedralis a Roman Catholiccathedral. It is the largest Gothic cathedral and the thirdlargestchurch in the world. It wasbuilt to demonstrate the city’swealth : « Let us build a churchsobeautiful and so grand thatthosewhoseeitfinishedwillthinkwe are mad ». Construction began in 1402 and continueduntil 1506.

  40. IBERIAN PIG & PRODUCTS Wednesday, May 14th VISIT TO AN IBERIAN PORK PRODUCTS FACTORY : CONSORCIO DE JABUGO Factories for curing the renownedJamónIberico are dotted all over the Sierra. The mostsaught-afterhamcomesfrom the village of Jabugo, where the biggesthamproducer, Consorcio de Jabugo, isbased. Jabugo is a synonym of tradition and ritual in the artisan production of Iberian ham. In this town of Sierra de Huelva, with an altitude of 700m and micro-climate that enables the hams and shoulders to cure in natural drying houses at the pace of the seasons, is the Consorcio de Jabugo's cellars, where the incomparable smell and the exquisite taste of their Iberian meats are established Jabugo’s village Rewards for the excellence

  42. CORK INDUSTRY Wednesday, May 14th CORK OF ANDALUCIA The corkoakcroptakes place betweenJune 15th and August 15th. Lawsforbidtakingcork off the treesoutsidethisbriefperiod. Employees have spent 2 yearsatcollegestudyingthissubjectbeforebeingallowed to work on a treewithspecialcorkkniwes. The corkis in fact a sort of parasite on the bark of the treebeneath. The Iberiancorkindustry, as well as bottle-stoppers, isalsoused in diverse processesfrom car construction to aeroplaneinsulation. Spain has become the world’sbiggestproducer of cork .

  43. ARACENA’S HERITAGE VISIT TO THE CAVES Friday, May 16th The municipality of Aracenaissituatedat the heart of the naturalparkSierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche. Westartour tour with the visit of the gorgeousGruta de las Maravillas  (caves of Marvels), whichis one of the mostemblematicnatural monuments in Andalusia and the main tourist attraction in Aracena, itisalso the most impressive limestone caves complexe in Spain. Discovered in 1886 and opened to the public in 1914, itincludes a total of 2130 meters of subterraneans. The caves are locatedbelow the hill on which stand Aracena Castle and church.

  44. ARACENA’S HERITAGE VISIT TO THE CASTLE Friday, May 16th The castleitselfnowonlyconsists of ruineddefensivewalls, but thereisalso a large church, the Gothic-Mudéjar Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Doloresbuilt in the 13th century, by the KnightsTemplar. This churchis the destination of an annual procession on the Pentecost and the best place for viewingsplendid panoramas of the town and countryside.

  45. ARACENA’S HERITAGE DESCUBRIR ARACENA Friday, May 16th Nearby the Plaza Alta is the newlyrenovatedAyutamiento (Town Hall), a red-brick building, designed by Anibal González in 1911, whoworked on the great exhibition in Sevilla in 1929 and designedthe Plaza de España. The Casino de Arias Montanowasalsodesigned by Anibal González. It issituated on the biggest place of AracenaPlazadel Marqués . In the Town-Hall we are welcome by the mayor of Aracena.

  48. DEPARTURE DAY Sunday, May 18th Specialthanks to : the headmaster Mr. Gabriel de la Riva, Mrs. Lola Márquez, Spanishcoordinator, all the Spanishteachersinvolved, and of course to our host families for their warm and professionalwelcome.
