  8. Warm-up • Should you turn in your paper as soon as you’re finished writing it? • What should you do first?

  9. Step 16: Editing • Editing gives you the chance to preview your work in anticipation of someone reading it. Good revision and editing can transform a mediocre first draft into an excellent final paper. Revision may mean changing the shape and reasoning in your paper. It often means adding or deleting sentences and paragraphs, shifting them around, and reshaping them as you go. Before dealing with details of style and language (editing), be sure you have presented ideas that are clear and forceful. Make notes on your paper as you go through these questions, and stop after each section to make the needed edits.

  10. Step 16: Editing • Editing by yourself: • First check whether you fulfilled the assignment. • Have you written the research paper that the guidelines describe? • Have you provided a clear thesis? • Is your thesis supported by reasons that are fully developed? • Have you given enough evidence to prove your reasoning? And support your thesis? Be sure that the reader knows why and how your ideas are important. • Then look at organization. • Does your introduction make clear where the rest of the paper is headed? • Does the order of your reasoning make sense? • Have you used transitions to make connections between the paragraphs? • Would a person reading your conclusion know the importance of your paper? • Now look at your style by moving to smaller matters such as word choice, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and spelling. • Read passages aloud to see if the sentences make sense and the ideas flow. Look for places to use short sentences to draw attention to key ideas, questions, or argumentative statements. If you can't read a sentence all the way through with expression, try cutting it into two or more. • Grammar and spell check. Try to read through once again just to look for incomplete sentences, improper capitalization, misspelled words and incorrect punctuation.

  11. Step 16: Peer Editing • Step 1: Read your research paper aloud to your partner. Make note of anywhere that you tripped up speaking because it might indicate an incomplete thought, sentence or incorrect grammar. Then your partner will read his or her research paper to you also making notes. • Step 2: Exchange papers with your partner. Use a colored pen to WRITE YOUR NAME AT THE TOP OF YOUR PARTNER’S PAPER. Then, ON YOUR OWN, revise and edit your partner’s paper – make sure the thesis, topic sentences and evidence all prove their claim/argument. • Step 3: Return the paper to the writer.Give them a compliment about something that they did well and tell them what you liked about their stories.Explain any corrections you marked.Give them a suggestion of something they could do to make the stories even better.

  12. REMINDER • NOTHING IS EVER FINISHED!
