OCCUPIED LANDS • Germany conquering Europe. • Japan taking up Asia and the Pacific. • Hitler sets up “puppet governments”. • Ruled by Aryans • SLAVS considered inferior. • Countries stripped of all culture/resources. • “Living Space for Germans” • Policy to kill all peoples judged “racially inferior”. • Slavs, Gypsies, mentally ill, and JEWS.

The Final Solution • By 1941, Hitler and the Nazi’s had developed a plan to eliminate the Jewish problem. • Ordered the deliberate murder of all European Jews. -- GENOCIDE • “Death Camps” in Poland (7 in total) • Jewish are shipped to camps • Nazi’s devise most effective means of killing • Auschwitz -- 2,100,000 killed

  6. THE CO-PROSPERITY SPHERE • “Asia for Asians” ---- Anti-Imperialism • Treated conquered people w/ brutality. • Chinese, Filipinos, & Malaysians. • Real Goal: Japanese empire in Asia.

  7. THE “ALLIED” WAR EFFORT • The BIG THREE • FDR, Stalin, Churchill • Agreed to finish war in Europe first. • Each distrusted the other • Stalin begs for help! • 1944, USA and Britain open a western front to help Soviets.

  8. TOTAL WAR • Each side totally committed. • Factories make war supplies. • Ends unemployment from Depression. • USA restricts certain citizen rights. • Japanese Americans treated unfairly. • Many lose jobs, place into “INTERNMENT CAMPS”. • Women serving in war.

  9. TURNING POINTS • The tide turns to the Allies in 1942-1943. • Battle of El Alamein • British stop Nazi’s in Egypt • Erwin Rommel “Desert Fox” • AXIS forces driven into Tunisia. • This allowed ALLIES to leap into Italy. • Forces overwhelm Italy in a month. • 1943 -- Mussolini is overthrown!!

  10. THE RED ARMY RESISTS • The Soviets were able to stall Nazi’s outside out Leningrad. • Hitler looks to advance from the South and take Stalingrad • This city is named after whom…?

  11. STALINGRAD • One of the costliest battles of WWII. • Nazi’s surrounded the city. • Soviets then surrounded them. • Street-by-street conflict • Germans were trapped and surrendered in 1943. • 300,000 killed or wounded. • SOVIETS go on offensive.

  12. INVASION OF FRANCE • 1944, ALLIES are ready to open a second front in Europe. • Invasion of France • Must organize troops & supplies • The ALLIES would choose June 6, 1944 to begin the operation. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower

D-Day June 6, 1944 ---- “Day of Days” • ALLIED paratroopers were dropped behind enemy lines. • In the Dawn, 176,000 troops were carries by boat to the shores of Normandy. • Germans occupied the beach and hills. • Machine gun fire and underwater mines greeted the ALLIES. • Slow crawl through the enemy forces.

  14. Omaha Beach • The ALLIES suffered great losses. • Broke through German forces!! • Moved towards Paris to end Hitler’s reign. • By August 25th, ALLIES had retaken Paris. • “FRANCE IS FREE!” • Attention focused on defeating Germany and Japan
