DONOR Italian Embassy through the ROSS Emergency Initiative for Lebanon (funds allocated for the post 2006 conflict rehabilitation) IMPLEMENTING AGENCIES GVC – Gruppo di Volontariato Civile (Italy)in partnership with ADR – Association for the Development of Rural capacities (Lebanon) Resumption of agro-economic activities and enhancement of production capabilities of rural cooperativesin South Lebanon SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE This action aims at revitalising the economy of conflict-affected areas in South Lebanon through supporting the resumption of rural income-generating activities. Purpose of the project is the resumption and strengthening of traditional agricultural activities, support to agro/food-processing cooperatives and enhancement of the mixed production systems among rural communities of South Lebanon.

BENEFICIARIES • Al Sharq Cooperative for Medical and Aromatic plants of Aaitaroun (villages of Aaitaroun, Hanine, Ain Ebel, Rmeich, Blida, Maroun er Ras, Aainata) • Public Agricultural Cooperative of Houla + la Savonnerie. • Jabal Aamel Beekeepers Cooperative (producers scattered in more than 20 villages) • Agricultural Cooperative for Food Processing of Debel • Agricultural Cooperative for Food Processing of Ain Ebel • Agricultural Cooperative of Halloussiye and its surroundings • Group of farmers in Aaitaroun for safflower growing

ACTIVITIES • Support to farmers and cooperatives for the resumption and the enhancement of agricultural and agro-processing capabilities through distribution of inputs and equipments • Enhancement of technical skills, organisational and management capabilities of rural producers and cooperatives • Support to marketing and enhancement of cooperatives and agro-producers strength in the national market

ACTIVITY 1Support to farmers and cooperatives for the resumption and the enhancement of agricultural and agro-processing capabilities through distribution of inputs and equipments • Distribution of zaatar seedlings and installation of drip irrigation system (Coop. Aaitaroun and Houla) • Distribution of hives, tools and equipment for honey production, queen reproduction and royal jelly production (Coop. Jabal Aamel and Aaitaroun) • Distribution of agro-processing tools and equipments: solar dryer for fruit/vegetables (Coop. Halloussiye), equipment for essential oil distillation (Coop. Aaitaroun and Halloussiye), re-activation of the soap production machinery (Savonnerie de Houla) and equipment for quality control (Coop of Debel, Ain Ebel, Halloussiye & Jabal Aamel). • Safflower oil press (group of farmers of Aaitaroun) • Rehabilitation of the food-processing facility (Halloussiye Coop). • Milk transformation equipment (Debel and Ain Ebel Coop).

ACTIVITY 2Enhancement of technical skills, organisational and management capabilities of rural producers and cooperatives TECHNICAL TRAININGS • Irrigation techniques and zaatar propagation (Coop. Aaitaroun and Houla) • Bee diseases control, bee queen reproduction and royal jelly production (Coop. Jabal Aamel and Aaitaroun) • Soap production techniques (Savonnerie Houla) • Essential oil extraction (Coop. Aaitaroun and Halloussiye) • Safflower oil extraction (group of farmers of Aaitaroun) • Milk transformation (Coop Ain Ebel and Debel)

Debel, Ain Ebel and Halloussiye) • General safety (Debel, Ain Ebel, Halloussiye and Houla) • Computer literacy

  7. ACTIVITY 3Support to marketing and enhancement of cooperatives and agro-producers strength in the national market • Setup of the network of cooperatives Karam al Janoub • Support to marketing and to the participation to national fairs and exhibitions (Souk l Tayeb, Souk L Ard)
