  1. Chapter 26, Section 1

  2. Vocabulary • Create a flap book and study the following words: • Astronomy • Galaxy • Astronomical unit • Electromagnetic spectrum • Telescope • Refracting telescope • Reflecting telescope

  3. Astronomy • The scientific study of the Universe • People who study the universe are Astronomers

  4. Organization of the Universe Galaxies account for almost all the visible mass in the Universe!

  5. Quick look at Distance in Space

  6. Measuring Distances in the Universe • Distances are HUGE in space • Miles, kilometers are much to small to use • Astronomical Unit (AU) = distance between Earth and the Sun (150 million km) • AUs are used for measurements within our solar system • Light-year= the distance light can travel in one year, 300,000km/s • The closest star to Earth is 4.22 light-years away • If we could travel on the fastest vehicle NASA has ever built (Helios 2), it would take 19,000 years.

  7. Measuring Distances in the Universe • Video—Distances within the Solar System • Video—Distances within Space

  8. Observing Space • Most of the visible mass we see in space are the galaxies • The Electromagnetic Spectrum is all of the wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation. Visible light, radio waves, X-rays, Infrared, UV, etc. • We use different types of telescopes to see the different parts of the Electromagnetic Spectrum

  9. Telescopes

  10. INTERACTIVE • Telescope FlapBook
