  1. Group 6: Cell structure and function (Lipid Synthesis) Done by: Chloe Chua Deborah Tan Delynn Lim Laura Ng Sarah Kok

  2. Cell structure:Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum

  3. Fun facts about Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum • It is usually prominent in cells that specialize in lipid (fat) metabolism and synthesis. • Smooth endoplasmic reticulum lacks ribosomes on its surface and is smooth in appearance.

  4. Functions of Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum • Where proteins and lipids (fats) are made. • Its primary function is to modify, encapsulate and transport newly synthesized proteins and lipids. • It contains exit sites from which transport vesicles carrying these proteins and lipids bud offfor transport to the Golgi apparatus.

  5. Cell structure: Golgi Apparatus

  6. Fun facts about Golgi Apparatus 1)The Golgi apparatus is made up of a series of pancake-shaped, connected, membrane-bound chambers called cisternae. 2) The cell wall of plant cells is exported to the outside of the membrane by Golgi bodies. 3) The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is usually abbreviated as SER. 4) The Smooth ER consists of tubules and vesicles that branch forming a network. 5)Found within the cytoplasm of both plant and animal cells. 6) Plays an important role in the prevention of destruction of cells

  7. Functions of Golgi Apparatus • The primary Golgi body functions are to modify the new proteins synthesized from the ER present in the cytoplasm, then process them and sort them for transportation • Packages proteins inside the cell before they are sent to their destination; it is particularly important in the processing of proteins for secretion.

  8. Lipid Synthesis • Protein involved in the synthesis of lipids, a diverse class of compounds which are insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. • A synonym of “Lipid Synthesis” is “Lipid Biosynthesis”

  9. Cell Structure: Vesicles

  10. Fun facts about Vesicles • Vesicles fuse with the golgi apparatus and release their contents into the golgi apparatus. • Secretory vesicles contain materials that are to be excreted from the cell. • The secretory vesicles containing modified substances are pinched off from the golgi apparatus. They then move to fuse with the cell membrane and their contents are released outside the cell.

  11. Functions of Vesicles • Vesicles are mainly involved in the transportation of material in/out or within the cell. • Vesicles carry proteins, nutrients, and water into, out of, and around the inside of the cell. • To be precise, there are two different types of vesicles: 1. Those that transport modified materials from golgi or rough ER to other parts of the cell. • 2. Or those that transport secretory materials (usually proteins) from the golgi apparatus to the cell wall. They release the materials to be secreted from the cell. They then join with the plasma membrane. • Some vesicles serve as storage vessels as well.

  12. Questions • What are the two parts of a cell that we have talked about today? A: Smooth Endoplastic Reticulum and Glogi Apparatus B: Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum and Golgi Apparatus • What is another name for Lipid Synthesis? A: Liquid Synthesis B: Lipid Biosynthesis • Name one fun fact about the Golgi Apparatus. • What does the Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum lack? A: Ribosomes B: Nucleus • What is the function of Vesicles?
