  2. Whales • Mammals- give live birth, warm blooded, nourish young with milk • The only mammals that live in the ocean their entire lives • Belong to order Cetacian • Two orders of whales • Baleen • Toothed

  3. Baleen Whales • Largest animals on Earth • Have baleen plates that filter food and water • Baleen- like a large broom to catch food • Includes Blue Whale, Humpback Whale, Grey Whale, Minke, Sei

  4. Blue Whale • Largest animal on Earth -80 feet long and weigh 120 tons • Loudest animal on Earth- can be heard for more than 100 miles • Live for 35-40 years • Preyed on by killer whales (babies) and humans • Live in all oceans, not near coasts

  5. Toothed Whales • Smaller than Baleen whales • Live in pods (usually) • Use echolocation for finding food and other whales • Includes: Sperm Whale, Bottlenose Dolphin, Spotted Dolphin, Orca (Killer Whale), Beluga Whale, Narwhal, Porpoise… (and many more!)

  6. Orcas • Fierce predator • Only fear is humans (hunting) • Actually part of dolphin family • 27-33 feet long, weighs 8-12 thousand pounds • Eat seals • Highly intelligent and trainable (Sea World)
