  3. Community service that is connected to coursework….. • The service experience is grounded within a particular context • The course provides a learning environment that challenges and supports students as they connect to community

An applied learning tool that is different from an internship, field experience, or volunteering • Internship or field experience focus • Opportunities for students to practice acquired knowledge and skills • Evaluation of students’ knowledge and skills by an assigned supervisor within the field • Volunteering focus • Students provide a service to the community • Type of service is determined by the community

Service learning is important because…. • Reflects Jesuit ideals/philosophy • Men and women for others • Service • Education for justice • Social justice • Improves academic performance (knowledge and skill development) balance of theory and practice -the engaged learner • Opportunities for personal and professional development--Assists with career and life choices • Increases commitment to community and engaged citizenship—e.g. multicultural perspectives

A service experience that provides opportunities for reflection…… • Reflecting your experiences off others provides feedback and a greater depth of understanding • Types of reflection include: • Journaling • Discussions • Online chatting • Creative work such as: • Photo journals • Artwork • Reflective papers

FACULTY Check to see if the course you are teaching is a SL course Outline your expectations in your syllabus Contact your department’s coordinator, the Dean’s office, and CSASI for assistance if needed Track you class(es) through your UIS account STUDENTS Check to see if the course is a SL course Check your syllabus--ask your instructor for clarification as needed Attend service fair CSASI listings Contact service site early!!!! Note due dates for contract and time sheet submission View your progress through your UIS account Getting started…..
