Prevailing Winds • AKA: Global Wind Belts • Where convection cells (air masses) meet forming jet streams and prevailing winds • Winds move from a area of high pressure to an area of low pressure.
H Polar Easterlies L Color red Blow East to West H Trade winds Equator L H L H
Easterlies: • Polar Easterlies- high altitudes, cold dense air that blows East to West. (from the Poles to the Equator) • Trade winds- Low altitudes, blow East to West toward the Equator.
H Blow West to East L Color red Prevailing westerlies H Equator L H L H
Westerlies: • Mid latitudes blow West to East toward the poles.
Color red Equator
Other: • Pressure belts from inbetween the wind belts • Doldrums: along the equator. Heating causes the air to expand, resulting in cloudy, rainy weather.
