  2. Viewing Film & Discussion Questions • We will watch the first chunk of Edward Scissorhands. • After, we will go over discussion questions on page 164.

  3. Jigsaw • You will be assigned to a home group. Each group member will be numbered 1-5. You will be jigsawed into “expert” groups: all the ones in one group, the twos in twos, and so on. • Your “expert” group will be assigned a cinematic technique from the graphic organizer on page 164. • We will watch the key sequence again. It is your “expert” groups job to record your observations about your cinematic technique in the boxes provided. • After, you will share your findings back with your home group.

Analytical Statement with Textual Support • As a class, let’s look at some cinematic techniques and discuss their effects. • Brainstorm some cinematic techniques used in the film. • List examples of this cinematic technique. • Now, what is the intended effect of the cinematic technique? -Use the graphic organizer below to help. Analytical Statements • Now we will look at how to create an analytical statement with textual support about one of the cinematic elements in today’s showing. • Think of your statement like a mathematical equation Cinematic Element + Purpose + Example *Think of your explanation of intended effects in EA1.

  6. How to begin writing an analytical statement with textual support. Plug and Chug Give me your cinematic element, why was it used, and how it was it was used (example). Purpose of Cinematic Technique Example: A purpose of long shot is to make characters look vulnerable. Effect(s) of Cinematic Technique Peg looks very small in that big room. The long shot builds suspense because the viewer is worried about Peg. Example(s) of Cinematic Technique When Peg is upstairs in the castle

  7. How to WRITE an analytical statement with textual support. • Now that you understand what you need to say in your analytical statement, here is a great way to start writing the actual statement. (Author), in (Movie), uses (cinematic technique) in order to (achieve what purpose). For example (evidence from the text to support the topic sentence). *look at example on page 165

  9. Writing your own analytical statements • You will now write your own analytical statement about the cinematic technique you took notes on in your “expert” group. Use the triangle graphic organizer to help you begin writing your analytical statement.
