  2. Stressors VS Stress • Stressor – External events, factors, or people that cause stress. A new or unpleasant situation! • Stress – Physiological, psychological, and emotional response to stressors

Kinds of STRESSORs • Emotional – one’s thoughts and fears • Family – interactions w/ family members • Social – interactions w/ peers, bf/gf/friends etc. • Change – alterations in your life; school, moving etc. • Chemical – Drugs, alcohol, medications etc. • Work – School, job, money etc. • Decision – pressure associated in making serious decisions • Commuting – anxiety from traveling, driving, etc. • Physical – change in the state of your body. • Environmental – weather, living conditions, temp, etc • Disease/Pain – long/short term injury or illnesses. IE Cancer

  6. Two Forms of Stress • Eustress– Positive Motivates, focuses energy Is short-term Is perceived as within our coping abilities Feels exciting Improves performance

Distress • Causes major anxiety or concern ,death • Can be short- or long-term • Is perceived as outside of our coping abilities • Feels unpleasant • Decreases performance • Can lead to mental and physical problems • Examples: death of a spouse ,filing for divorce, the death of a family member , being abused or neglected, unemployment, etc.
